Hi my DS had an op at 5mo but on his kidney not a hernia so I can give you general baby in hospital experience. It is horrible seeing them in a hospital bed, for me the worst bit was handing him over to go to theatre and the oh so long wait to hear he was back out safe and sound.

Ask anything you want of the nurses they won't mind even if it seems stupid to ask it (and if they do mind ask for someone else to come see you!)

thank you, i am in tears just thinking i have to hand him over for the operation, i dont think i willbe strong for that.

I cried - a lot. They are very use to it though and had a big box of tissues on hand! Take something to ty and keep you distracted while he's in theatre and be prepared for it to take longer than they said it will - it doesn't mean something's wrong just that sometimes it takes them longer than others.
When is his op? Have they told you yet.
It's tough but you can do it x

Good luck for Tuesday I'm sure it will be fine. Do you have to go in on Monday or are they letting you arrive early tues morning?

firstsupermum · 15/06/2012 23:32

actually, i just receive the lettre today as they just call me on the phone before, tuesday just the pre-assessment they will do some test to ensure my ds id fit for the anaesthetic and surgery, they asking me to arrive at 10am.
they saying this tests will take up to 2hours, and than after be able to offer a date for the actual procedure.
i am a bit relaxed to hear that on tuesday will not be any operation even that i know he will have to do it one day.
i will be giving an update to what will happen.
hope evrything will be good.

Hi, I was up in the special care unit with my premature twins recently and saw a couple of babies have hernia ops. At first I thought that would be a big deal but everyone really played it down, the doctors and nurses said it was such a routine op and that there was nothing to worry abut, the babies even went home the same day. All us parents up there were so used to seeing babies on monitors and with wires etc, where as I guess it would be more difficult for you but your baby won't even know what's going on and make sure you utilise the support of the staff. Your baby will be well cared for and from what I saw up the hospital all will be fine and an amazing job will be done....

My DS had a hernia op at 5 mths - was v scary at the time but hospital were amazing. Surgeon said to us very straightforward & bless the lovely nurse afterwards who said 'I'm up for running down to meet him if you are "

We stayed overnight in hospital so they could monitor and home in the morning, no after effects, no real change to routine.
