Nits...my first time...any useful hints?

Aargh!! I never had nits growing up so this is all new to me. My dd (3) was scratching her head this morning so I had a look in her hair and saw a few white bits. I thought I'd better treat them to be on the safe side and absolutely loads of lice came out when I was combing her hair. I feel terrible. I found one on her pillow too Sad

So I treated dd and ds with Lyclear and used the comb afterwards. Then put a tea-tree leave in conditioner in afterwards and put dd's hair in tight plaits. I could still see some white spots in her hair though, so I guess I just need to keep combing until they're gone?

I've washed all our bedding at 90 degrees and I've just treated myself (found one in my hair).

What else do I need to do? Will we get on top of them??

I've been dreading the day my two get nits because (a) I'm rubbish with things like this and (b) they've got the most beautiful curly hair so lots of places to hide!

Putting them in front of the TV really helps keep them still long enough - DD has long hair and it takes ages to do thoroughly. I don't use TV a lot, but on occasions it is the best invention since sliced bread...

Lots of conditioner, preferebly tea tree, comb until every single last egg & lice has gone and repeat every two days to break their life cycle.
Don't bother with chemicals, as most lice are immune and it is very expensive to treat whole family, if you must buy one, don't use the mousse its never worked for me.
I bought a really good comb it was £9.99 from sainsburys, gets eggs out really well but i cant remember what brand it is

Keep combing, conditioner is brilliant and wash the bedding really often. I cried the first time mine got them, and realised I had nits too for the first time in my life :(

AberdeenAnxious · 11/06/2012 12:46

Yes, I feel like crying too! Took the day off work today to get myself treated!

Conditioning and combing it is, then. They were getting so fed up with it this morning, especially dd as she has so much hair, that I resorted to bribing them with cholocate spread for breakfast. Needs must and all that!

My dh works away but was home this weekend so I told him and he's combed a coulple out of his hair so I guess we're all infested Blush. I still feel itchy even though I've treated myself and combed through, although I've got quite long thick hair so it wasn't easy to do myself. I can envisage us all sitting in a row like monkeys de-lousing each other!

Thanks for the advice Smile

Try to remember all children get them. Use lots of conditioner and comb with a fine comb every day for the first 4 days then twice a week (wed and sun's here) for 2 weeks. Once most are gone, usually after 4 days, get a Nitty Gritty comb and carefully comb through each section, this will remove the nits, empty egg shells. HTH :)

MrsTrellisOfSouthWales · 11/06/2012 13:09

Nitty gritty the feckers. Spraying tea tree might make you feel better Wink but comb comb comb, loads of conditioner and Nitty Gritty comb. Poundland had some Lyclear last time I was there, and that came with an additional comb. The pharmacist recommended Hedrin Once, which I used on me because I couldn't be sure I'd combed my hair (not that I had any, just a lot of psychosomatic itching!) but for the kids it's combing that gets them out.

AberdeenAnxious · 11/06/2012 14:37

I'm getting the message about combing! I looked for a Nitty Gritty comb today but couldn't find one. I do have a couple that have come with lotions though so they should do the trick until I find one. That's what we'll be doing for the next few weeks then!

I'm itching like mad. My neighbour's a hairdresser and she had a look through my hair and said it was clear, but I'm still itchy! Who knew something so small could cause so much trouble?!
