2 and a half weeks ago my ds kicked one of those metal signs they have outside newsagents. (wrong I know, he was told very firmly not to but he does so enjoy pushing boundries) Instead of kicking it flat on he caught his shin on the side of it. Cue instant screaming and the bruise starting form instantly. Once we got home he was fussing about it for a while not limping or anything just being careful of it giving it the occasional rub etc thats it. I've not thought of it since really, untill I was putting him to bed tonight I caught sight of it again thinking well thats been there a while I rubbed it gently he flinched and said ow and there was a hard lump underneath the bruise. Now I promise I'm not being PFB for a start hes my third and 5 years old if that helps. Has anyone had to deal with a particularly stubborn bruise like this with a lump. It isnt showing any signs of healing now going yellowy pale around the edges IYSWIM. Do you reckon it needs looking at or should we wait and see?

I had something similar when I fell down some stairs when I was 13. My right leg still has a bit that goes out at the bottom of the calve rather than in iyswim.

Googled because I remembered something - It sounds like a hematoma from a severe bruise www.bodybumps.net/Bruise-with-Lump.php

My DD aged then about 2.5 yrs tripped over a cushion and banged her forehead on the edge of a built in cupboard in our living room. She had the most horrific bump (I'm talking like a Neanderthal forehead), it made one side of her face swollen. The bruise and bump was epic and w not only was it there for a very long time but it actually moved over the days and weeks slowly down her her forehead until it looked like she had a black eye. My friend who is a nurse said it was normal to do this. The lump is still there 2 years later, although much smaller and not all noticeable. I was worried at the time but was told and show by lots of other people that it's normal to have a residual lump under a bruise site for a very long time after the accident. We did take her to casulatly after the accident happened though.
I personally don't think two weeks is that long for a very bad bruise and hurty lump, but if I was worried i would get it checked out, especially if it was hot to the touch or the site was getting larger etc. x x x

Just read eastendwendys post and my nurse friend described DD's massive, moving lumpy bruise as a 'hematoma'.

Glad you reassured. x x

My ds had this when a friend at school kicked him really hard in the shin. The bruise went long before the lump and the poster above is right its called a hematoma. Hope that helps
