Took ds1 (6) to the optician and he needs glasses also found out he has a lazy eye requiring patching and after telling the optician about the pain ds has been having he discovered little scars on the cornea in both eyes, he is being referred to an eye specialist but i really dont understand how this could of happened it was hard to listen to the optician as ds was playing up touching everything so i was trying to keep him under control does anyone know anything about corneal scarring? thanks

I think it really depends on the degree of scarring. To my knowledge it can happen either from infection or from physical contact. It is extremely common. Your optician has probably referred you to be absolutely sure of the amount of scarring as in some more serious cases, it can lead to visual impairment. It is best to get checked but don't worry, there are plenty of corrective measures that specialists can impliment if required.

If your DS has been complaining of pain then that would make me think is possibly happened recently. Has he been near any sand, could any have gone in his eyes?

I would imagine he will get seen fairly quickly if he is in discomfort.

thanks CG i just wrote on your other thread as i didnt notice it before i posted this one, he has complained about the pain for about a year gp has said eye looks fine before and as it would come and go for days at a time then stop for weeks then come back thought it was maybe an attention thing or tired eyes from his sensory issues only the optician picked it up

It does sound a bit unusual.

If the optician is concerned then this will be clear in his/her referral and you will be sooner rather than later.

As extremum said it could just be something straightforward, so dont panic. (Easier said than done)

I have some corneal scarring from a torn cornea (I stupidly left a contact lens in for three days then when I took it out it ripped off part of my cornea which then got infected). I imagine some kind of injury has happened to your ds. It doesn't have to be a dramatic traumatic injury. The cornea is pretty delicate, he could have got a bit of grit in there and just rubbed it a bit too hard. My scars don't stop me wearing lenses (the worst ones are off to the side) and they only really show up when the optician puts the funny yellow dye in them and looks at them under ultraviolet light.

thank you both, yeah i know i will just have to wait and see what specalist says hopefully wont take to long to get appointment

What i found so strange was it was both eyes you would think if you got something in your eye it would be one eye, the optician did use yellow dye but seen the scars before that then put the dye in to see if it has caused damage and apparently it didnt seem to have.
