Stubborn cradle cap- almost 2 yo

Does anyone have any wonder cures for cradle cap? My DS is 2 next month and the top of his scalp has had quite thick flakes since birth, which when they come away, bring hair with it. Have tried olive oil and have always used Dentinox cradle cap shampoo but nothing seems to work. I'm wondering whether I just need to wash it more often- only 1-2 x per week at moment.

Tips please..!

Oilatum, rubbed on neat then gently rubbed off with cotton wool.

One thing I found that really works on cradle cap is nit combs- the good strong metallic kind with rounded-off teeth rather than the plastic slightly spiky kind. It combs flakes out really well. Having said that, DD3 is 2.9 and still has loads because she has loads of hair that she hates having combed and won;t let me anywhere near with a nit comb.

Soak it really well with some oil. Baby oil, olive oil, whatever. Leave it really well soaked for several hours, preferably overnight, rubbing it gently every now and then and adding more oil if necessary.

The next morning rub it gently as if you are shampooing it to loosen the flakes. Then use a nit comb to bring the flakes away from the scalp and off the hair.

Don't pick the flakes away with the nit comb because that can hurt and introduce infection.

Repeat the whole process every night until it is cleared.

The hair it brings away is hair which would normally have fallen out but has stayed because it is stuck in the flakes. You aren't pulling it out of the roots.

The trick is to really soak it well with the oil so that it loosens the flakes underneath the surface.

Once it is properly clear it is much easier to keep under control.

Coconut oil works well but it takes ages. It finally went when ds was nearly 5.

DD is 3.5 years now and still has some like this. The health visitor pointed out to me that it bothers us more than it bothers them, so I have never treated it with anything. Occasionally I pick a bit off brush it over to see if it will come away, but eventually it will go.

I second metal nit combs!!!!

Nit comb here as well. Works and is very satisfying to do!

astreetcarnamedknackered · 02/06/2012 21:18

I should add you wouldn't be picking them away with the comb. What actually happens is by combing gently you are lifting the hairs which are no longer in their roots and the cradle cap simply lifts away with the hair. At 2 I really doubt you would be risking infection.

Capasal shampoo... Ask your go. Not pleasant to uSe as contains coal tar plus coconut oil and a derivative of aspirin but it does work

duchesse · 04/06/2012 09:44

I spent a happy half hour nit-combing DD's hair last night, once she was too tired to resist. Got loads of scales out! You just comb really gently, parallel to the scalp, and they lift off really easily.

It is pretty satisfying isn't it! Blush

Head and shoulders

DD had it few weeks ago, she's 3.5. Oil didn't work that well, we used Kelual shampoo (Ducray is the brand)-we're in France, I don't know if you can get it in the UK? It worked after 1 or 2 times.

Apparently not rinsing shampoo well and not drying the hair properly (as in vigourously rubbing with a towel) makes it worse.

It may well be ezcema rather than cradle cap I would go to the doctor my DS still has it at 3 it is a little better than it was but he will outgrow it but its definitely ezcema.

Thank you people- some good things to try here.
Fingers crossed!

hi!
both of my boys had rashes on their heads and i wasn't sure how to get rid of them...Johnsons products just seem far too strong for the babies so i was advised to use a cream called Aqueous...it is a water based petroleoum cream which can be applied as a cream or as a body wash..it is gentle on babe's skin and the rash cleared up very quickly...it works on all ages..i recommended it to my mum (age 64) last year for a rash that she had and she always keeps a tub of it to hand now...i hope that this is of some use to you..good luck xxx
