Chicken Pox - please can I have some advice

My dd is 6 and is in day 2 of the chicken pox. She has several nasty blisters on her face which I have been dabbing with the pink calamine/aquaeos cream but she cries in pain which I apply it which makes me wonder what good it's doing. Should I only be applying it when the spots have turned scabby and really itchy? Should I be dabbing the blisters that look so pus filled in case I pop them? I've read you need to keep skin clean - is it OK to give baths with this horrible rash....but most of her spots are on her face, I'm struggling to get any where near her to just dab her spots at the moment, let alone wash her face! I'm really completely unsure of how I should be treating this. Any help and advice would be gratefully received. Thanks

My son has come out in chicken pox this afternoon and my DD had it a couple of weeks ago so have already received lots of advice from friends. So, baths are fine, I found they helped. I was recommended aveeno oats for the bath or just oats which I did and this seemed to help (I just put a small handful into a pop sock, tied it up and put in bath). the calamine cream is good but have just been recommended virasmoothe which is a gel so maybe that would help? piriton syrup will help relieve the itching and you can alternate ibuprofen and calpol so that she has some pain relief every couple of hours. hope this helps - good luck, I'm just working out whether to cancel our camping trip tomorrow :(

Eurex cream and piriton has always done the job, my children were covered with spots and hardly itched so no picking hence no scars. I've also heard the virasmooth is also brill.

I would not use capol all the time if you can help it. The fever is the bodys way of killing the bug. Each new wave of spots comes out with each rise in fever. When you suppress a fever too much you drive the virus deeper, its better to try and ride it out if you can. Even the NHS has new guidelines on the use of fever reducers.

Yes, oat baths, aloe vera gel, lots of rest, socks on hands at night. Keep a eye out for infected spots.

Another here with the pox - started today. Also have a camping trip planned...DD is prob staying here while I take DS. Doesn't seem fair for him to miss it.

DD won't take piriton syrup - says too spicy. Can't get near her with cream either. Will try a bath if she's up for it.

Aloe Vera is supposed to be good. Helps minimise scars too so could be good for face.

Sodium bicarb in the bath really helped my DD when she had it a few weeks ago. The chemist said to put a big dessertspoon in a full bath - it really seemed to help her with the itching. And not sure if the bicarb had anything to do with it but the spots crusted really quickly.

Essie - so sad about camping. still not sure whether to go but think probably shouldn't. have already paid upfront so losing quite a few £ and the kids were so excited.

Thanks to you all for taking the time and trouble to post - some really good advice here. Will try her with a bath with the bicarb/oats and investigate some of the other lotions and potions. So sorry for you ladies who had camping organised :( - such cruel timing for you. My dd is feeling soooooooo sorry for herself at the moment (you'd think no-one else in the world has ever had the pox) - I'll tell her about your poor dc's and their missed hols - it might make her see she's not alone and it could even be worse :(. I'm worried about the spots on her face - she has the majority of them there and some of them are huge - am paranoid about them scarring her - I can't get near to clean her face in any way. Could there be the risk of infection if I can't keep her face clean?
