stammering courses

hello, my ds, just turned 11, has stammered off and on since 3 years old, but with long periods of non-stammering. Have tried speech therapists here (we live in Spain) but not impressed so far. Plus everyone we know who has used local speech therapists have nothing positive to report, e.g. 64 half hour sessions with no change, apathetic therapists churning out the same stuff every week or getting the child to read aloud. So, having watched a programme about the course Gareth Gate promotes, we are thinking of taking DS back to UK for one of these intensive courses. Has anyone had any experience of them? Aren´t they for adults to learn to cope with their stammer rather than trying to treat it? Would love to hear any experiences, good or bad, to help us decide what to do.

Oh tigermother oh god big problem. I bet you were told lots of times "don't worry they WILL grow out of it". From what I've seen GG course is adults only. A friend of mine was in a simialr position with their 8 year old, but they came across the stammering project. I understand they do therapy by skype. e-mail: [email protected]. My friend said that they talked about why their boy stammered and looked in depth, they did not just try to teach tricks to hide the stammer, I've seen a massive change in their son, so much confidence now, even school work improving.

Lidcombe therapy worked a treat for DS who developed a stammer after lots of speech issues.

jemtalk, thankyou so much for that - i really like the sound of therapy by skype and I think ds would feel comfortable with it. Poptart, thank you I will also look into Lidcombe. very very sorry for not coming back to this before now but you have given me hope.
