Yup. Inhalers (croup went on until DS was 2 and we were raced in and out of A&E in ambulance as he went blue in face with it at times). Steamy showers. Wet flannel on hot radiator. Lots of sleepless nights and cuddling little one.
PS. He has asthma now and still has little races to inhalers and A&E.

DS started at 16 months, and still regularly gets it, and he's almost 9. He has a lovely Dr. that ensures that I always have at least 2 doses of steroids on hand in case of emergency (although we haven't had to go to the hospital in the past 3 years, he probably has about 5 bouts of croup per year, and about 3 of those are bad enough we need steroids to keep him out of the hospital), and periodically personally checks in over the phone with me. I found that going outside in the cold air helps far more than steam with him. I also found that turmeric (given in a large spoonful of honey) actually helps. It isn't a miracle, but it definitely helps some, and I wish I had found out about it sooner. Nothing else really helps with him.

Ds (2.5) had 7 croup attacks, 4 of which have landed him in a and e needed steroids.

The bigger issue for him is the fact he has pretty severe asthma and a croup attack plays havoc with his chest. 3 times we have ended up back in hopsital within a week with a big asthma attack.

Interesting thread. My DS has had croup 3 times - he's 16 months. The last time he needed to go to A&E and had two doses of steroids over 2 days (plus calpol etc). My DH is asthmatic. Is there any correlation?

shaymarie · 29/05/2012 18:01

That would be gr8 if you could look at our page Grin thanks

I'm afraid I'm not really that scientific about it, tomatoface. I try to give him as much as I can get down him without a fight, since it does have such a strong taste to it. It has been easier to do now that he's older, and understands why I'm giving it to him. If I had to guess, I'd say closer to 1/2 teaspoon when he was littler, and I'm probably closer to a teaspoon now. I tried about a teaspoon on myself when I'm sick, and, as I said, it isn't like it is a miracle, but it does seem to help and does have anti-inflammatory properties.
