Can I give my two month old Calpol after his injections?

I don't understand the wording on the box - for 2-3 month olds, it says 'weighing more than 4kg and not premature'.

My baby was born at 36+2 and weighs more than 4kg - in fact, he weighed more than that at birth (yes, really!)

So can he have Calpol? I assume not, but am not sure.

You can, it may say 'from 3 months' on the front of the box, but I think there's somewhere in the instructions that says 'For immunisation purposes' 2.5mls 4-6 hourly.

I know I can give it to a 2 month old after injections, did it with DS1 - but am confused because DS2 was slightly premature but nothing like the weight of a premature baby. He was a porker

Yes, but only if he needs it - if his temperature is up. It specifically says that it is to be used for post-immunisation fever.

AMumInScotland · 28/05/2012 20:49

Would he be 2 months or more if he'd not been premature? I think they want to avoid you giving it to them if they wouldn't be 2 months old yet if they'd arrived at term.

Lexiesgirl · 28/05/2012 20:50

This is just an assumption, I'm certainly not qualified, but I would take that to mean babies who were very premature and who at 2 months would still only be around their EDD.

kickingking · 28/05/2012 20:51

I know only for post immunisation fever.

So I can give it to him (if he needs it) even though he was slightly prem? Nobody's addressing the prematurity!

Sorry, Lexiesgirl x-posted.

He would be 5 weeks corrected and weighs about 11lbs now.

I'm sure mine says "from 2 months" on the box. I can't find it now to check but after DD's injections she reacted badly and we had nothing in the house so I sent DH to talk to the pharmacist and he came back with just normal infant calpol.

(Wincing at thought of 36+2 and over 8 lbs....)

He was evicted by elcs because he was growing so fast! I didn't have to push him out, thank God...

If he's only 5 weeks corrected then I wouldn't give him it, despite his weight being good. His systems won't be as mature as a 2-month-old ought to be, and paracetamol is very hard on the liver.

kickingking · 28/05/2012 20:58

Thanks, I did assume I couldn't give him anything.

Dreading tomorrow, remembering how poorly DS1 was his first set of injections Sad

I would check with the nurse who is giving them. Hopefully he won't need it though. DS was fine with all of him thankfully.

nancerama · 28/05/2012 21:02

Check with your pharmacist - mine is excellent at knowing what you can and can't give to a baby.

My DS was totally unaffected by his immunisations - it's very likely you won't need anything at all.

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 28/05/2012 21:03

My dd was 36+6 and much smaller dr said it was ok to give calpol at two months :) he said that they tend to think of anything over 36 weeks being term :)

bumbleymummy · 29/05/2012 09:52

Don't give it unless they really need it. Apparently it reduces the effectiveness of the vaccine.
