ring worm

this perhaps should be in AIBU section but am here instead. we mind a teenager on a regular basis for her carer, and i am a mother to an 8 month old baby. the teenager girl came to us this weekend; on arriving at her house to pick her up i was told she has ringworm (i saw a huge red ring on her leg) and given 2 towels for her to use, and cream for it. i didn't think much of it, went out for the day, and someone told me it was highly contagious; i then looked up info about it online and realised it can be passed on very easily. im a bit annoyed that i wasn't given more information, and that i wasn't given a choice in taking her this weekend. im worried that my 8 month old will catch it - she has been playing with her a lot, sitting on blankets etc. am i over reacting?

Actually, no, I don't think you are overreacting. Ring worm is indeed very contagious and can be picked up from surfaces, not just direct contact.

It can, however, be avoided by washing thoroughly with soap after contact. O would refuse to mind the child until the ringworm had cleared up

i think i wouldn't have been so concerned if the baby hadn't of been so small - but she's only 8 months and it would be so hard for her to have itchy skin at that age never mind me dealing with more sleepless nights cos of it. the teen is holding the baby a lot and i can't really stop her, she would be offended, but inside i am cringing a bit as im aware she could catch it.

Sorry, but I think that you are overreacting! I wouldn't be too worried about this at all. My daughter gets this (and has done since a baby) and none of us ever catch it off her. We are not that cautious about it either! Even if we did catch it, it is so easy to treat that I still wouldn't worry about it. We use canesten (or generic brand) and it clears very quickly. I think some people are more susceptible than others.

Hope that helps your concerns!
