Any dentists / orthodontists out there...?

My 12.9 DD has small features and her top teeth are crooked and stick out a bit. Our dentist has said that she will probably need 2 teeth out and a brace but has repeatedly said that he cant even refer her to an orthodontist until all her baby teeth are out and the adult ones have come through. Seems reasonable to me but I cant help noticing girls her age and younger with braces on now. I am in no rush for her to have this treatment as I'm sure it wout be much fun for either of us but I would rather it interfeared with school etc sooner rather than later. Do people get different / earlier treatment by going privately or am I worrying that we are missing out on something needlessly?

I have no idea but my dd has an underbite, she's 9 and is getting referred after her next 2 top teeth (eye teeth) I think fall out, I'm told it's easier for her teeth and jaws to have the treatment younger as everything is still soft.

Ds is 16, and had braces fitted a few weeks ago. Sadly we have to pay privately and because of that I believe if they thought he should have had braces sooner they most certainly would have done. We had to wait for one of his top canines to come through before they could proceed.
Additionally he needs a anchor to hold the back of the brace in place. Sigh more expense.
He tells me he could feel the teeth moving almost as soon as he had them fitted.

DSs had braces from 7 - privately obviously. Standard age otherwise seems to be around 12-13 judging by DS1s friends.

jjazz -you could be talking about my DD in your OP.

She is the same age, small build all over (incl mouth), mouth overcrowded but still has some baby teeth to lose.

At her last dentist visit he said that he would probably be referring her to the orthodentist after her next check-up in 6m time. Its likely that she will have to have some teeth removed due to the overcrowding before a brace is fitted.

In her peer group there were a few that had braces in Yr 6 (I suspect these may have been private patients??) but its not until now, Yr 7, that the majority are having them fitted.

NorbertDentressangle · 27/05/2012 12:56

Sorry, by "the majority having them fitted" I don't mean that majority of Yr 7 have them...what I meant was that the majority who have braces have had them done recently, whilst in Yr 7, rather than any earlier IYSWIM

I'm not a dentist but I just wanted to say that, If you have been told to wait for certain baby teeth to fall out, you should ask the dentist to check that there are definitely adult teeth under them to come through. I'm 36 and still have four baby teeth that haven't fallen out cos there are no adult teeth under them. I have a very small jaw and that's probably why.

It may be because their baby teeth have been lost earlier, or they are having treatment for a different orthodontic problem.

my daughter had to wait until all her adult teeth were through before starting othodentic work. Some friends had already had braces by then, others have just had them fitted.
Don't think it makes much difference re NHS or private, although may have to wait for an NHS place even if teeth are ready.
We went private after falling off the NHS list through no fault of our own, but glad we did as he is great. Had 4 molars out on the NHS though...good surgeon but very sorry looking daughter!!!

Y6 is the youngest I know (wouldn't have thought it was private)

Lots 13-14 year olds. I may have waited longer than necessary to raise the subject with DD1, but I knew she needed to feel self conscious about her wonky teeth to bother. (She wouldn't have cared at 12)
