My 4 month old baby girl had a tongue tie op early monday morning and was put under with a GA, she was nil by mouth from sunday night and now hasnt fed since, I;m drip feeding her expressed milk but hosp say its just temporary but the TT procedure was supposed to make breastfeeding much better but so far its been horrendous, anyone have any experience of this???

Both of my children had TT ops. My ds at 17 mths under GA and my dd at 8 wks without any sedation. I had stopped feeding my ds by the time he was done but my dd was still BF. She also went off feeding from me for a few days - luckily she had always taken expressed BM from a bottle so we went for bottles and I pumped like mad for those days.
She did come back round to the real thing after about 5 days - I just kept offering nipple first and then bottle if she refused and eventually she latched on and was fine. It must've been a bit sore for her... and she had to re-learn how to latch on with a tongue that could move more!

If your dd is not taking bottles/more than a few drips, then I would be ringing the hospital/your drs as the weather is so hot and she may end up dehydrated.
Hope things improve for you and your daughter soon.

Thanks, glad Im not alone, we were in for 2 days and she saw dr yesterday and theyve said she is getting enough to not be dehydrated for now but they hope she turns a corner soon...
Shes never had a bottle and they think it will confuse her even more atm.

Oh good, glad she's been checked over. I certainly wasn't suggesting that you introduce bottles now - she would not know what was going on!! We were lucky that both our children took EBM in a bottle after a week so they were used to both.
Hope things get better soon and enjoy your daughter.

Is she trying to suckle at all? If she is, can you try breast compressions as she feeds so that she's getting more without as much effort?

Ds went on nursing strike at about 6 months after an ear drum perforated.

What I did with him was rick him to sleep in my arms then, when he was pretty much asleep, offer the breast. He then fed in his sleep for a couple of days. Then on the second day I gently woke him up as he fed. He then fed okay, although it was about a week before he took the breast with no problems at all. He tended to look longingly at it, go to feed then pull back at the last minute. I guess it must have burst actually when feeding or feeding made it worse.

Might she need a painkiller Treehugger? Perhaps some paracetamol suspension 15 mins before a feed?

TreeHuggerMum1 · 25/05/2012 19:08

Thats exactly what she does, she looks at it and wants it and she cuddles up to it but cant bring herself to feed, she'll gladly take the drips of my "let down" but wont actually latch.
Shes on ibuprofen and paracetomol that the hospital supplied and they assure me that shes in no pain... Shes actually crying out in hunger today but still wont feed and I'm wondering if I should just give a bottle a try???
