Poor dd2 is coughing almost non-stop, it sounds very painful and croupy, have had to keep her home today as she hardly got any sleep. She seems fine in herself, no temp and is eating and playing but this cough sounds horrid.

Is whooping cough still around?
Could it be croup? (she's 6)

Has she not been vaccinated against whooping cough?

Marne · 18/05/2012 11:02

She has been vaccinated but its never 100% effective is it?

Its probably just a cough, she suffered from croup as a toddler so could be that also Sad.

It could be croup. If it is go to the go and get a dose of steroids if it's giving her jip

Whooping cough is around. I know a 3 month baby with it - I was all ready to blame anti-vacc people until I read something saying that they now think the whooping cough vaccine doesn't last as long as some of the others and they are considering introducing a top up vaccine at 11. One of the problems, apparently, is that it can take a long time to diagnose because children have been vaccinated and so it gets ruled out from the outset IYSWIM.

marge2 · 18/05/2012 11:08

It could be whooping cough even if she was vaccinated. Both my DS got it despite beineg vaccinated. The symptons were text book, but I had to INSIST on getting the anti-bs for them as the docs said it couldn't be whooping cough as they had been vaccinated. Docs said 'virus - go away it will pass' but after I MADE them give us antibiotics they got better within a coupe of days. after having being whooping and coughing up foam for a few weeks.

Grrrrr poor little things!

Hope she gets better soon, Marne.

bumbleymummy · 18/05/2012 11:34

The vaccine apparently only lasts a few years. Definitely worth getting swabbed for it but the antibs are more to stop the spread of it and after 3 weeks it usually isn't contagious. Best to keep away from small babies in the meantime anyway.

Both ds and dd had this a fortnight ago. dd's turned into a chest infection and ds needed more inhalers. I didnt think it was whopping cough because they didnt whoop.

Marne · 18/05/2012 13:28

I will keep an eye on her, we are off on holiday on monday so i hope it clears up over the weekend. We are sat in a steamy room but still coughing Sad, she seems happy enough though but she's not one to make a fuss.

An inhaler might help.

bumbleymummy · 18/05/2012 14:16

Marne, if it is whooping cough it lasts several weeks. :( its also known as the 100 day cough. How long has she had it for? If you are travelling you should think about getting the antibs because they reduce transmission risk. It would be awful to give it to a young baby, it can be really dangerous for them.

You may want to look on this website. Dr Doug Jenkinson is an English doctor who has done a lot of research on whooping cough.

Moodykat · 18/05/2012 16:39

I had whooping cough when I was about 7. It was horrid. I used to really panic as you cough out and out and out but can't breath in again for a while. It was scary. It doesn't sound like that's what your DC has got but obviously I'm not a Dr!

SocksOnFire · 18/05/2012 16:51

I had whooping cough earlier this year, Dr sent me for blood tests to confirm at once. I protested that I had been vaccinated (in my 30s) and he practically laughed as he told me it doesn't last that long!!!

Marne · 18/05/2012 16:57

I dont think it is whooping cough (she's not whooping), its getting worse now, makes me think its more likely to be croup. Not sure what to do now as gp surgery is shut, i hope we dont end up in A&E tonight, dh is working late and i have no one to look after dd1 Sad.

Phone ooh now then x

bumbleymummy · 18/05/2012 19:11

Agree with sirzy, phone ooh if she is getting worse. Best to rule out something nasty especially if you're going away!

Not all children 'whoop' esp as they get older but it could be something else anyway. Better to see someone in real life! Hope she feels better soon.

Marne · 18/05/2012 20:03

OOH will send us to A&E which is miles away, dd1 is in bed, dd2 is still coughing in bed. I'm pretty sure its croup, last time she had it it lasted 3 days and she was fine (gp checked her). Her breathing is fine (inbetween coughing).

My DS has had a bad cough for last 2.5 weeks, occasionally does sound like whooping cough. About to have 3rd visit to doctor.
