Dental question - enamel not formed on first adult molars

Went for our dental check up today and have been told that the enamel hasnt formed properly on ds's (age 5) first adult molars that have just come through. His adult front tooth has come in looking fine. He has been prescribed Duraphat 5000ppm fluoride toothpaste to try and prevent the teeth from decaying. He also got flouride paint applied to the 2 molars.

From googling, this toothpaste shouldnt be used on children under the age of 16 - is it really safe for him to be using this toothpaste on a daily basis given his age?

Hmm. I'm not going to be much comfort on this. I've got one molar that the enamel didn't form on. Actually I think it's now 1/4 a tooth.

I've hardly had any problems on my teeth except that one. It decayed very quickly despite the protection the dentist put on it. I've had 3 different crowns on it, root treatment, and more. It still causes almost the only problems I have with my teeth. Sorry.

do you think I will be ok using this toothpaste on a 5 year old though - that's my worry. Hopefully the rest of his adult teeth will be ok.

I'm afraid dd1 had one of her first adult molars come through without its full coating of enamel. We tried some special gloop (not Durophat), but dentist told me quietly that it was unlikely to work, and eventually the tooth had to be extracted. This was seven years ago, and all the others have come through fine though.

Seems fairly common although I hadn't heard of it until my dd had the same. The dentist painted some protctive cover on them which didn't work well and she's had fillings which seem to have stemmed the decay.

Can you contact the dentist, explain that you've seen this bit on the packaging and double check that he's prescribed the right brand/type? It's most likely that he will say it's ok to use it on younger children so long as they are closely supervised to prevent them swallowing it.
DP uses Durophat in an attempt to preserve one of his few remaining molars - so glad dds seem to have inherited (mostly) my families healthy teeth rather than his disaster areas. The main thing seems to be that you shouldn't eat it.

I would think it is ok because it is only being used on the molars and not the whole mouth but yes, call your dentist with your concerns and I am sure they will help to reassure you :)

The dentist said to brush all his teeth with it and use it instead of his normal toothpaste. Will give them a ring tomorrow and double check. DS used it tonight and said it is nicer and less minty than what he usually uses so thats a bonus!

Brush all his teeth with it, he will be fine unless he eats the whole tube in which case he may be poorly. All of his front teeth are formed now (in his gums) so they won't be affected, the main issue with Fluoride is mottling of teeth & even if that does happen, it may well only be his widsom teeth that are affected. You won't be able to see that.

Make sure you spit the stuff out but don't rinse with water/mouthwash so the toothpaste hangs round more & does its job.
