Worried about my baby boy - advice needed to lower stress levels!

Hi everyone

I've only just joined (I meant to months ago but things have been hectic!)

I really need some advice about my baby boy. He is 5 1/2 months and has had cold after cold. The latest one has him coughing a lot and he has a lot of catarrah. I think he is also teething.

This morning, straight after BOTH feeds, he has brought a load of formula back up. He isn't a sicky baby at all - he never does this. He always finished his whole bottle until a couple of days ago when he has about an oz less.

I took him to the GP on Monday, who listened to his chest, took his temperature and looked in his mouth. He said the cold/cough wasn't on his chest and it would eventually go.

Can any of you advise about him bringing his formula back up. There really did seem to be a lot and I'm really worried.

Sorry that my first post is a call for help!

Laura

I'd see what happens on his next feed and consider going back to the doctors if he sicks it all up again.

Thanks Forester - that's probably what I'll do. He seems fine in himself & I'm assuming he doesn't have a tummy bug or he would be more likely to throw up an hour after eating rather than straightaway?

When mine were babies they would always sick up their milk immediately after drinking it if they had a tummy bug. Babies respond to illness completely differently to adults as they have no control over their bodies and so their bodies take over when they are ill and do what they need to do! If he's got a lot of mucus they tend to swallow it which makes them sick.
If you are uneasy, take bubs in though!! Mummy knows best Wink

If he is always a bit unwell and mucusy he might be allergic to milk. Does he have any eczema?

laurajane1975 · 17/05/2012 13:08

Thanks Peachypips - that's good to know. The poor little thing only had a tummy bug a month ago so I hope he hasn't got another one. He seems to catch one thing after another!

Rubirosa - he doesn't have eczema but that's an interesting point. Hopefully I'll see a GP who knows his stuff rather than just say "it will clear up eventually!"

When my dd and my ds when he was younger, have bad mucussy coughs or colds they do tend to be sicky, I think due to too much mucus being swallowed and then a big load of milk landing on top of it. There would be a cough and sometimes just a small but and sometimes what seemed like a hole bottle would come back up.

It could just be that?

laurajane1975 · 17/05/2012 13:18

Hi Lisa

That's what I was hoping it was to be honest. He has been so mucussy since this latest cold - the mucus has been causing the cough. Could this also be putting him off his milk?

Does teething put them off milk too?

Sorry for all the questions, I'm just at my wits end with him being continuously ill & although I know it's nothing serious I just want him to be well :(

I would try offering little and often rather than full feeds.

Teething can cause millions of things, it does generally make them feel less hungry though, and always give mine snotty noses etc.

I don't think this weather is helping much, the bugs are just sticking around. I've got 3 under 5 and I feel like we've had a stream of snotty noses, coughs and infections since the autumn.

Try not to worry, kids get all manner of infections but do trust your instincts. If you are worried at all just go to the dr, you are better off being told you are being silly and pfb than risking them being very poorly!

lisaneedsarest · 17/05/2012 17:11

And yes, c

Whoops pressed send too soon, but yes colds can also put them off their milk.

It's horrible watching them when they are poorly!
