My son had a febrile convulsion on Tuesday his first one ever. The doctors thought he may of had an infection but his throat and ears were clear so were his bloods and his urine and is totally back to normal today. I'm a little confused as to why it happened as it came on all of a sudden he was happy and playing and then had the convulsion had no complaints of feeling unwell. There is epilepsy on my partners side of the family and im worried that it may be the start of that.

Generally febrile convultions are usually brought on by a sharp rise in temeprature. The temperature doesn't have to be that high, it's the rapid rising that is the concern there. So it can come on very rapidly.

Did your ds have a temperature?
Have you mentioned to the doctor your family history? I don't know how genetic epilepsy is, but I think it can be. If you haven't talked about it to the doctor and he's assuming it's febrile, then it's probably worth going to talk about it. They might want to do an MRI scan or I think there's other ways of testing too.

He didn't have a temperature before it happened we were on our way to the shop and it was cold and raining and he was fine before we left the house. When we got in the ambulance his temperature was 38.8! I did mention the epilepsy to the doctors but they didn't seem to concerned about it really they just said it was a febrile convulsion but they can not rule out epilepsy in the future.

38.8, if it was a quick rise could well be febrile. It may have come down slightly after the fit too. They can never rule out epilepsy in the future to anyone, so all that means is "we don't think it's epilepsy today". I suspect they'd say that to anyone (covering their backs) with family history or not who asked about it.

If you're concerned, speak to your GP. If he thinks there's a chance it could be the start of epilepsy then he can refer on.

However from what you said febrile is a definite possibility. If there had been no sign of a temperature at all, then I'd push much harder for a referal.

If he does fit again, then push to be checked, but, in under 5s having had one fibrile convulsion does up the chance of another, as having had a parent who had them too. So even if he has another it could be the same.

Well fingers crossed he won't have another this one was scary enough for me and my 5 year old daughter to watch xx
