Hi my 4 year old son had a febrile convulsion last night which was horrible for me and my daughter to watch it lasted 5 mins and he was unconscious for 20 mins. He went to hospital and they could not find out the root cause of it apart from his temperature. He is totally fine today been singing and playing and his temperature has gone down. Just wanted to ask if I would be able to take him out today as he seems totally fine or should we just stay in xx

Hi Kirdy not really much advice to give, but wanted to say I feel for you - my DS had one when he was a baby and it was horrible. It made me completely paranoid about any slightly raised temperatures after that - but other than that, it never happened again and this is about fourteen years on now Smile

It's much more common than you would imagine, and the chances are it will never happen again. Easier said than done, I know, but I would just go with how he's feeling - if he wants to go out to play, etc, let him, if he wants to rest then do that - but I'm sure he'll be fine Smile

Poor you, febrile convulsions are scary but have no lasting impact and don't lead to epilepsy.

If he's absolutely fine today, eating, drinking, normal temp, no rash etc then I think a trip out to the park or something would be fine Smile

Thank you it was horrible I have never seen anything like that before and he had been perfectly well all day until we went to shop and he walked off wet himself then fell to the floor. I was terrified and so was my daughter she is only 5. He seems totally fine today he keeps telling me he is not poorly anymore and wants to go out. I'm just glad he can't remember any off it. Xxx

Its just a worry that they could not pin point why it happened no cold or throat or ear infection and his bloods were clear and there is epilepsy on my partners side of the family his three uncles had it along with other conditions which left them in wheelchairs

Poor you - it's so scary isn't it? DS2 has this during his chicken pox bout, sudden surge in temp and he was out, it terrified me and I called the paramedics who were superb, they gave him Calpol and checked him out, he was right as rain in no time. I would carry on as normal but take some Calpol with you just in case.

O I feel for you! My son had one when he was 20 months and hasn't had one since. Apparently they are rare after the age of 5. My son had his due to a high temperature as he had tonsilitis although I seem to remember it was only about 38.4 and he has much higher temperatures since and been ok.

If your son feels ok I would let him get on as normal just keep up with the calpol if his temperature is still up.

It sounds like it was a much more traumatic experience for you than it was for him!

Yeah was alot worse for me then him. And I am keeping him topped up on Calpol. I'm just happy that he us ok xxxx
