SUN CREAMS???

Hi Mummy's.. i have an 11 month little boy with blonde hair and VERY pale skin.. as it was nice over the weekend we spent a lot of time outside.. I'm always very cautious when it comes to keeping him in the shade but obviously in a when walking its not always possible. I used Nivea's 50+ kids sun cream.. but he still ended up with a burnt face..
So I have decided I would ask other mums if you have any ideas on whether or not there is a higher spf available and if it is suitable for very sensitive skin..
I have heard that America are now selling a 100+ cream but am unable to find anything about it online. i was thinking maybe a lotion for albinos? as my son has pretty much got the same complexion. any advice will be greatly appreciated :)
thankyou in advance.
ps.. im very new to mumsnet so please excuse me if i make mistakes or get a little lost..
thanks again. lolo x

I don't think there's much evidence that anything over 50+ has additional benefits. The most important things for sunny days are:

  • to apply it at least 30 minutes before going out in the sun.
  • to reapply at regular intervals - every hour is good.
  • to make DC wear a wide-brimmed hat. I know that's easier said than done but it is so important.
  • to avoid being outside for long periods of time in the hottest part of the day, 11-3.
  • to find shade where possible.
  • to keep hydrating with water.

2 yo DS is very fair and he has never burned. It takes a lot of effort, especially trying to keep a hat on! I spent a lot of last summer puttingbhis hat back on and taking him inside when he refused to wear it. It took a while but he learned.

Apparently anything over SPF 30 is pointless. I agree with Akmd's tips about hats etc. my boys are always in hats and light cotton shirts. We use badger suncream SPF 30 and so far we have had no sunburn! :)

Make sure its not the sun cream that is causing it. I spent last summer confused as to why everytime DD went out in the sun she got burnt despite plenty of sun cream (also used nivea kids) until she decided to cover her self in it on a miserable October afternoon and within a couple of hours her face was in a right mess. Still haven't found one yet that works for her yet so she only gets out in long sleeves and hats when it really sunny.

Have you tried Badger suncream Champagne? It's a mineral suncream (zinc oxide) and has all natural ingredients. Worth a google! :)

thankyou ladies!! AKMD thankyou.. he always wears a hat and is pretty good at not taking it off..

and Champagne.. i thought this.. he has very very sensitive skin.. and did look a little red before i even let the sun near his skin! plus i only put cream on his face (his legs were exposed, but not in direct sunlight, i always make sure he is in the shade as much as i can) and nothing else looked 'burnt' ..

isnt zinc oxide in nappy cream?? maybe this could b used instead of suncream.. i shall google it..

thanks ladies xx

You have a magic hat-wearing toddler?! Shock Envy

Ultrasun is good for sensitive skin, you can get it in Amazon, or in Waitrose.

We had this with DD1 - realised eventually that it was actually hives- an allergic reaction to the suncream. Our GP prescribed "Sunsense" as the hypo-allergenic ones had the same reaction, and it seems to do the trick.

cheekyginger · 23/05/2012 22:12

We use simple suncream SPF 50+

My very fair 1yo survived a very sunny holiday for a week with no sunburn....phew Smile

Oh I have just started a thread about this as am a bit worried about my son getting sunburn at school. I did apply some on him in the morning but it didn't last and they don't apply it themselves. I forgot the hat!!! I used Green people but it didn't last...
