She's got all the symptoms- slight temp, general malaise, hoarse, the seal-like cough. I can't get through to the dr surgery, but is it worth taking her? Is there anything they can do?

She's having a nap now but I can hear her coughing away :( Is there anything I can give her?

If she can take brufen i would give her some of that.

They can treat it with steroids, but unless it is really bad I wouldn't go for them.

Thanks, is that better than Calpol? I don't think it's really bad atm, she is still sleeping and hasn't coughed for a while.

I would take her to the GP .

My son was about 9 months when he had croup - I took him to the GP initially when he was it started (although didn't know it was croup at the time) and GP said it was laryngitis - I slept on the bedroom floor in his nursery for a few nights as I couldn't hear him cry - Anyway a few days later I wasn't happy with the way he was and I went straight to the GP's surgery to get a appointment - mothers instinct kicked in .

The receptionist took one look at him , called the GP out straight away who then called 999 - my DS was struggling to breath as his airway had become extremely swollen with the infection.

A night in hospital etc and all was well.

PLease keep an eye on your DD for any breathing problems - especially what they call stridor

O golly...

I'll keep a close eye on her and try the dr tomorrow if she's no better.

Sorry to have worried you but it can turn suddenly .

In the meantime use steam to help loosen the mucus and ease cough.

When DS came out of hosital we broought a humdifier for his bedroom like these

Some advice here

Sirzy · 14/05/2012 14:41

To be fair cases like that are rare and unless there is any struggling to breath there is little medically that can be done. Ds suffers from it a lot and normally opening the window and keeping him calm settles it only when it doesn't settle do we go to a and e for steroids.

Sirzy · 14/05/2012 14:42

Also the use of steam is no longer reccomended for croup

Whoopydofoxpoo · 14/05/2012 14:45

ah well Op totally ignore my comments then.

I know steam is no longer the recommended thing for croup, but when my DS suffered with it (4 winters in a row) A warm mist humidifier with a drop or two of tea tree oil in the top was like a miracle! x
