Just wondered what you all thought of these and can they sleep in them? Thanks

There is absolutely mo way they can have any effect at all. And small beads are always a cause for concern round babies.

ObviouslyOblivious · 11/05/2012 14:40

Makes the baby look like a junior Take That member. And unless your baby's skin in hot enough to release resin from amber, then they're basically just wearing a necklace.

NagooIsBuildingAnArk · 11/05/2012 14:41

I think they are dangerous, my friends 17MO wears one round her neck permanently and I hate seeing it.

There is no evidence to say that they work. They are woo. And a cord and small beads flavour woo is not a good idea for babies.

milkysmum · 11/05/2012 14:45

i've just bought ds an anklet one. dh thinks i'm bonkers. only had it on since yesterday so not sure whether it is having any effect yet

seeker · 11/05/2012 15:08

Milkysmum what do you think it's going to do?

HappyCamel · 11/05/2012 15:10

Well it's fossilised tree sap so I don't see how it can affect a child's teething pain. Small beads and children aren't a good combination either. I'd say save your money.

Littlemissimpatient · 11/05/2012 15:13

There was an article on here the other day think there was also some links to newspapers saying how much of a choking hazard they are and how many babies have died. I wouldn't give my child one!

Jocooley · 11/05/2012 15:13

I bought one today as ds is a real sufferer of the teething and am hoping it will help.
Milkysmum - ill be interested to see how your little one gets on.
Seeker - the amber is supposed to release healing properties so reducing inflammation and discomfort when it heats up against babies skin. Not sure why it wouldn't work.....

Jocooley, is your baby Jack-jack?

bruxeur · 11/05/2012 15:20

Gnaargh. Dragged in.

Jocooley, what are "healing properties"? Do you mean succinic acid? Do you know how hot amber has to get to release any kind of substance?

And even if your child is WILDLY hyperpyrexic, their teeth aren't in their neck.

Jocooley · 11/05/2012 15:21

Bruxeur - Haha (grins), what is that? never heard of jack-jack before.

seeker · 11/05/2012 15:21

It might work, if your baby's body temperature is regularly 200 degreesC.......

bruxeur · 11/05/2012 15:21

Do you know how effective topical succinic acid is as an analgesic?

I'll give you that one for free - not at all.

Chubfuddler · 11/05/2012 15:22

My SIL bought one for my dd, which was really kind. But it doesn't have any kind of safety snapper and I'm too scared of it as a choking/strangulation hazard to use it.

My mother has chosen to be offended on SIL's behalf.

Jocooley · 11/05/2012 15:23

Well I don't know I'm not a scientist but I am also open to things that are not necessarily prescribed or 'medicines' - surely its not going to hurt so why not.

OP posts:
bruxeur · 11/05/2012 15:24

Fucking hell.

bruxeur · 11/05/2012 15:25

So basically you're going to pay someone to give you a choking/strangulation hazard that isn't fit for purpose, but it's ok because you're not a scientist?

Would you be interested in buying a bridge? It's vintage! Nice central London location, too.

andiem · 11/05/2012 15:26

Because it is complete woo and dangerous potentially strangling/choking woo at that
But hey you go ahead

bruxeur · 11/05/2012 15:27

Are you going to buy it from ?

Jocooley · 11/05/2012 15:36

Oh back off. bloody hell - get off your soap box will you

OP posts:
bruxeur · 11/05/2012 15:37

Hippy rage! Terrifying.

HappyCamel · 11/05/2012 15:40

Well you asked what we thought. For the most part we think they're useless with the added side effect of being potentially lethal.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 11/05/2012 15:43

Sleep in them? Seriously? You do know a toddler died recently after going to sleep with her favourite bag. Her neck got caught up in the handle in her sleep. :-( :-( :-(

Get your money back. They are strangulation and choking hazards and do not work. Why they aren't banned is beyond me.

BranchingOut · 11/05/2012 15:46

I give them about the same effectiveness rating as crystals.

Also think they look naff.

Jocooley · 11/05/2012 15:51

Ok I'm obviously the worst mother in the world for even contemplating such an idea.
Yes I did ask what people thought but didn't expect to be made to feel stupid and like I don't care about my child.
Also those v sad an unfortunate incidents with bags etc are one off things and I'm sure more children die from everyday things like crossing the road etc so quit the scare mongering please
