Molluscum contagiosum

DS has just been diagnosed with this Harry Potter spell-sounding skin infection. He's got the lesions over his groin, arm pits, neck and a few on his torso. He's being really good about them, but I was very Sad to find out that he might have them for over a year. We've been prescribed Fuscidin to try to get rid of them, but grateful for any tips or words of help from anyone who knows anything about this please!

Thanks

Just reassurance that, if you leave them alone, they will eventually go away.

MrsWildermac · 10/05/2012 22:31

Zinc and caster oil - it'll disappear within a week. Slather it on every morning and every night. Amazing stuff.

Sparklingbrook · 10/05/2012 22:34

We left them alone and they went away, it wasn't anywhere like a year though. I blame the swimming pool myself.

MustBeMadDoingADegree · 10/05/2012 23:00

i had some when i was a young teen. they do go on their own, and apart from a single scar from the origional (and humongous) one at the top of my leg, which is hardly noticeable now, i have suffered no ill effects since they have gone. xx

TheOldestCat · 10/05/2012 23:02

DD had them for over a year. Eventually, DH popped one (very much against my wishes!) and covered it in antiseptic. They all disappeared within a few days. Odd.

I don't recommend this, by the way. DS has them now; we are waiting to see if they go away on their own.

cece · 10/05/2012 23:04

All of mine have had them. They lasted anywhere from 10 - 18 months. I was led to believe that there was nothing that could get rid of them for kids. TBH they weren't a problem, just there.

Anste · 10/05/2012 23:05

Is it contagious?

Heyyyho · 10/05/2012 23:09

Yes, very - hence the name

cq · 10/05/2012 23:10

My GP said not contagious, but I didn't believe her because, coincidentally, my kids had been bathing with their cousins who had it, also having been told not contagious, and lo and behold my son got them a few weeks later. It's a low grade virus similar to those that cause warts.

I took DS to a homeopath who treated him with Thuja. All disappeared in a fortnight. You can buy it in Boots now (last time I looked) so worth a try - although I know homeopathy is based on the individual body and mind bla bla bla - but another friend of mine tried it on her kids and it worked too!

HTH

DD1 got them round the top of her legs, they went away by themselves in about 8-10 months.

Despite everyone here totally randomly grabbing which ever towel is vaguely dry, no one else caught them. So there not horribly contagious.

startail · 10/05/2012 23:33

They're not

*see chat

boxyfoxy · 10/05/2012 23:36

when my daughter was 2 she had them were around for just under a year then went of their own accord. slighty weird little bumps aren't they? and the name, molluscum... ewwwww!!! they are very contagious, but most people have natural immunity to them, so the advice we received was just, don't worry about it, they'll go, and they did.

Spero · 10/05/2012 23:37

My daughter had them for about a year quite badly. She was upset as no one else at school had them (so I too doubt that they are massively contagious) so I took her to GP who said nothing could be done as it is a virus, so left it alone and they are all gone now and she isn't scarred, even though some were quite massive.

I would be wary of squeezing them, think you would possibly end up with scarring that way.

I have no truck with homeopathy but if it helps you to think you are doing something, give it a go.

boxyfoxy · 10/05/2012 23:38

I dont know how to link that above but I am sure you are all capable of cutting and pasting, even if i'm not capable of doing linking...

FamiliesShareGerms · 11/05/2012 08:35

Thanks for all the words of help and reassurance. Will see how the .Fucidin does, then maybe try some of the other suggestions. It'd be good to get rid of them for wearing shorts and t shirts in summer (if we get one!!) if possible

Thanks again

Yes, very common -even though I had never heard of it prior to DS getting it - I think he was about 6/7? can't remember...

He had them for probably about a year - and they just vanished - seemingly overnight.

supernannyisace · 11/05/2012 08:40

I must say we did sometimes pop them - couldn't resist.
;)

I had thEeem when ddd1 did. Very satisfying to squeeze but sadly pre-mn-boil-klaxon days.
