just changed DD's nappy & she's covered in a rash

it's mainly on her torso but a little bit on her legs too. Small, pinky slightly raised. She hasn't been itching. Took her temp & it's 37.8.

Any point taking her to docs or will they just say it's a viral rash.

Don't know if I should keep her away from other kids?

How old is your DD?
If my baby had a rash, I would see a GP straightaway to diagnose it. Probably call ahead and explain it could be infectious and might need to be in a isolated waiting area, so as not to infect other kids.
Considering its May (and the fact that my own DD has it) I suspect it might be chicken pox, but always safest to consult in young children. If chicken pox, it is very contagious, and dangerous for pregnant women and immunosuppressed people, so please keep her isolated!

cluccles · 10/05/2012 14:38

she's 2.7
it doesn't look like chicken pox at all and apart from slightly raised temperature she seems her usual chirpy self, no change in energy or appetite.

there's a case of shingles at her sister's school so have looked that up too but it doesn't match

You can't get shingles unless you've already had chicken pox. It is possible to catch chicken pox from someone with shingles, but really very unlikely - I had shingles and DS didn't get chicken pox despite me bfing and him being very close to me regularly.

poorbuthappy · 10/05/2012 14:44

What does the month have to do with chicken pox? Confused
If it's not spotty then unlikely to be the pox. Sounds more viral if it's a spreadable rash (if that makes any sense at all!!)
Any other symptoms?

cluccles · 10/05/2012 14:44

she hasn't had chicken pox and I'm 99.9% sure it's not that

OP posts:
cluccles · 10/05/2012 14:49

I did wonder about May too!! Grin
no other symptoms, just slightly raised temp (37.8)

OP posts:
poorbuthappy · 10/05/2012 16:13

Most likely viral, has the rash changed at all?

cluccles · 10/05/2012 16:20

no hasn't changed really. am wondering whether to take her to chemist to have a look then see how she is tomorrow as to whether to call doc or not

it's weird it seems to have come on really quickly

OP posts:
poorbuthappy · 10/05/2012 16:45

My kids viral rashes always look like it's been spread with a knife, somewhat speckled across the tummy.

cluccles · 10/05/2012 16:53

just went to the chemist who said it could be an allergy or the start of chicken pox. Just looked at symptoms of CP again and she really doesn't have any of the symptoms.

Have just taken her temp again though and it's now 38.1... Hmm
Do I call doc or wait til tomorrow? Chemist said to take her back there (not doc) in a couple of days - as long as she was well and her temp didn't go really high

johnnycomelurky · 10/05/2012 17:04

Could be roseola which is a harmless viral illness. Though usually starts with a high temp and rash appears when temp comes down. Pretty sure my son had it a few months ago, was just starting to get concerned about his fever when it disappeared and the rash came out. Here's a link (I hope)

johnnycomelurky · 10/05/2012 17:05

Sorry, just saw that temp is up so probably not Roseola.

johnnycomelurky · 10/05/2012 17:12

Here's a helpful article about rashes

GobblersKnob · 10/05/2012 17:13

If she is well in herself I wouldn't worry, just keep an eye on it Smile

cluccles · 10/05/2012 17:21

temp up to 38.5 now... waiting for doc to call back

still seems ok though, tucking into her sausages but looks tired

OP posts:
JollyGoodFun · 10/05/2012 19:35

How's she doing now?

cluccles · 10/05/2012 19:40

thanks for asking, she's asleep, doc wanted to see her said it was viral rash. doc took her temp & it had gone down a bit

OP posts:
kipsy · 10/05/2012 20:04

OP, hope it turns out to be a minor rash and clears up quickly.
I suppose I have chicken pox on the brain Grin what with DD in the thick of it.
CP is very common in Mar-May, that's why I made that rather cryptic comment earlier....

cluccles · 10/05/2012 20:41

thanks kipsy, hope your DD gets better soon

OP posts:
poorbuthappy · 10/05/2012 21:19

Glad she's asleep, hope she feels better in the morning.

JollyGoodFun · 10/05/2012 21:21

Good news :) Thanks for updating us.

cluccles · 11/05/2012 07:43

hmm she's 100% fine in herself this morning, temp 37.4-5 but she has a cough and her face is quite blotchy - any ideas? Still just a viral rash?

OP posts:
curlyLJ · 11/05/2012 10:42

Could it be an allergic reaction to something? or Eczema?
My DD (2.2) has had a rash since last Sat (which we also first though was CP) but as the week went on, some of it has gone blotchy and slightly raised (maily on her legs) the rest is tiny spots on her belly and back, not really raised but feels rough (dry?) - took her to GP yesterday because i needed peace of mind, even though she had no temp, and he says it's a combination of eczema (which she has never had up until this point Confused ) and an allergic reaction...

Still not 100% convinced but another of my friends had similar with her daughter at 2.10, it lasted on and off for a year and they never did find out what caused it and it's stopped now, all of it's own accord.
Sorry for ramble - hope that may help?
