How many X rays has your DC had?

My DS (7) has had 4 X rays now over the years for different things. He's recently had to have a dental x ray of his mouth because one of his emerging teeth has damaged the roots on another teeth which isn't due to be lost until he's quite a bit older. It has shown that he is going to need allot of orthodontic work. I know that he'll have to have more X rays etc and was a bit worried that he's already had quite allot. What do you think?

Ds is 2.5 and has had 6 chest x X-rays and is due another in the next couple of months.

hazeyjane · 09/05/2012 22:16

ds is 22 months and has had 4 chest xrays, an xray of his hips, a dental xray and an mri scan (brain).

I hate that he has had to have all these things at such a young age, but they have all been necessary.

cece · 09/05/2012 22:18

DD has had one on her arm.

DS1 and 2 have had none.

HateBeingCantDoUpMyJeans · 09/05/2012 22:20

Dd 4 has had one head X-ray and will probably have another in 6 weeks ish

Ds 8 months and none yet Grin

About 7 or 8 I think. She's 16. She's broken both wrists over the years, had dental x-rays for badly growing teeth and several possible ankle/foot breaks.

Interestingly, this year she had a problem with her hip and where usually the doctor has gone straight for the x-ray for problems, he decided not to do the x-ray first.

I assume that is because she is now considered to be of childbearing age.

headfairy · 09/05/2012 22:22

Ds is 4.8 and he's only had one, a hip scan at 6 weeks of age as he was breech.

Dd at 2.4 hasn't had any.

VivaLeBeaver · 09/05/2012 22:23

Dd is 11 and had a few. A wrist as a toddler, a leg when a bit older.

Then quite a few the other month with a possible fractured shoulder/collar bone. Oh and a finger a couple of years ago as well.

BustersOfDoom · 09/05/2012 22:28

Loads and then some! Three when he was a few weeks old as he had a dimple - and still has - at the bottom of his spine and they wanted to check it out. All fine. And then another four between being 5 and 7 as he managed to break one arm twice, the other arm once and his wrist. Scooter, roller-blades and bike!

However, he had cancer when he was 8 and had 33 days of radiotherapy to his head, neck and spine. He can never have any more radiotherapy as he's had the maximum dose but is fine to have x-rays in the future as the dose is so low in comparison. He's had a good few x-rays since as part of follow up checks. He's now 24 and in excellent health.

Sorry for the long post, I just wanted to reassure you that you have nothing to worry about although I can understand that you'd be concerned.

ilovehugs · 09/05/2012 22:55

Thanks for all your messages. Quite a range there. It's made me feel allot better.

Busters of Doom - Thank you. You have reassured me so much with your posts.

Good old Mumsnet.

DS had had two (one chest, one skull) by age 2.

I don't know the exact dose thresholds but IIRC you'd need to have lots and lots before you would need to be too concerned?

Springforward · 09/05/2012 23:11

Just found info on HPA website, a dental xray apparently gives you a similar radiation dose to eating 135g brazil nuts, and a chest xray is less than a third of the dose you get on a transatlantic flight.

BustersOfDoom · 10/05/2012 00:26

Oh I'm glad ilovehugs I know it can be so difficult when we worry about the side effects of the treatments to try and put things right. Been there, done that Grin MN is fab, I wish it had been around in 1995!

startail · 10/05/2012 08:59

DD2 must have had at least 10 with them setting, and checking on her two broken wrists. They were obviously not worried about the number and sent us back if the picture wasn't right.

We spent a lot of time in the Xray Waiting room.

DanceToTheIslandBeat · 10/05/2012 09:06

DD1 (2.5) has had none so far.

DD2 (10 months) has had 4 chest xrays and has another booked next month. It does worry me but I know they need them to get her better so the pros outweigh the cons.

As a PP mentioned, I think flying involves as much of not more radiation - and my DCs haven't ever been (and have very little chance) of going anywhere on a plane.

DeWe · 10/05/2012 09:35

Dd1 has a couple of chest x-rays with pneumonia when she was 8yo.
Ds had about 6 x-rays on his ankle when he had obviously injured it, couldn't weigh bear but nothing was coming up to show why, and he wasn't getting better (eventually it did). He was about 2yo then.

Madsometimes · 10/05/2012 11:06

Dd1 (11) has had one on her knee
Dd2 (8) has not had any so far

beautifulgirls · 10/05/2012 13:35

DD#3 has had more than I counted at the time when she was unwell and was on a ventilator for 10 days - they would x-ray her chest daily in PICU to monitor how her lungs were. She was 19months old at the time. Also had several leg and foot x-rays too and will likely need more (now 2.5yrs).

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 10/05/2012 17:32

About 30 by the time she was 6 months.

She's 18 now and I've lost count. She's also had 3 MRIs and several CTs.
