Not including days when they have phoned me to say she's unwell and I've gone to get her.

First GP totally disinterested, today's has decided that her level of tiredness isn't right, so has asked for blood tests.

Please may they show something. I want my DD1 back.

What is she having days off with? Tiredness or other symptoms? How old is she?

Lougle · 09/05/2012 19:39

She has SN and goes to Special School. All we know is that she has abnormalities which can be seen on MRI if you know how to look at them. She is globally 'delayed', but is one of the more able children in her school and does walk, talk, etc. She is supposedly healthy, and last year her attendance was very good.

This year she seems to have had bug after bug.she was off with a virus, then chicken pox, then another virus. She just doesn't seem to bounce Back.

For example, she got chicken pox -very high temp, hallucinations, covered in spots from head to foot very sleepy for the best part of a week, long recovery then straight into 2nd virus. Her 4 year old sister didn't even get it & her two year old sister got about 10 spots, no fever.

Since Christmas she's been generally unwell. Cold extremities, exhausted at school -they have to feed her lunch or she doesn't eat because she's too tired.

She's 6

Your poor dd.

Do you have any inkling of what could be going on to make her so run down? How is she at eating? Is she under a consultant who could help?

I started a thread a couple of weeks ago about dd1 (also 6), she goes through weeks of being tired, tearful and generally unwell.

She has had bloods done and our gp has referred her to the community paeds.

It is so hard to see them so run down. Dd1 has spent the whole of this term in floods of tears, looking dreadful and seeming so depressed.

I hope you get some answers, I'm here for a handhold if you need it.

VivaLeBeaver · 09/05/2012 19:53

I think if the bloods don't show anything I'd be pushing for a paed referral if she's not already seeing one. Hope she's better soon.

Lougle · 09/05/2012 20:04

She sees a developmental Paed, but it's all snuck up on us. She has been off for over a week with a cold and is still nowhere near ready for school. That can't be right!

Your poor dd (and you). It is good that she has been referred for bloodtests though. Do make sure you get a tube of EMLA cream in advance and have the nurse explain where to apply it 1 hour before they take the bloodtests. (I would collect it from your local hospital before your actual appointment so you have your dd ready when they take the bloodtest and she will not be in too much discomfort). Also, think of taking some things to distract her during the bloodtest (they might have to use several veins if she is unlucky), so it is good if you have something to distract her so she doesn't look when they are doing it. And a little present afterwards if possible.

I hope you get some results soon. I take that you already give her vitamin supplements and make sure that she has a good night sleep. Mind you, could it be that her school days are very long (e.g. before and after school care)? Because for some kids that is just too much and they get exhausted (this may not apply to your situation at all though).

Hope she gets better soon.

Lougle · 09/05/2012 20:31

The GP leant me a tube of EMLA (I was a nurse before I had the children & am still registered) and I'll return what's left after.

We always try and engineer 12 hours sleep for DD1 -she has melatonin, so bedtime is 5 minutes after she has that.

I can relate to this. DD gets all kinds of infections, some of them serious and has had AB twice a year since birth she is 5. She had a full bloods at Christmas which didn't show any abnormalities which was great but she is still unwell all the time - even now we are waiting for urine back.

It's really awful to have a child so constantly run down when you see super healthy children just bouncing back you think - why isn't my little one like that?

Lougle · 09/05/2012 21:19

Sorry to hear that you too have a fragile bunny.

So DD1 went back to school for a week. Day 3 of week 2 and she was sent home because she vomited in the hydro pool.

Not sure if she was actually ill, or combination of hot/water swallowing, but 48 hour rule applied, so off Thursday and Friday.

So...she's fine again, and then on Sunday (yesterday) she said her eye hurt. I thought 'hmmm...Sunday afternoon...' By 4pm there was a small red line on her eyelid. Piriton given. Went to bed happy.

First thing this morning, hugely swollen eye, closed, in fact glued shut. So, trip to the GP who felt that hospital was the best place for it.

DD1 is technically an inpatient having IV antibiotics, although she is allowed home as an 'ambulatory patient' because the doses are 24 hours apart. She has to go back tomorrow lunchtime for another dose, and then they'll decide whether to continue IV Abx or to convert to oral.

I've had enough of this now sad

All bloods were clear except coeliacs (which isn't back yet). Another full set were taken this morning.

What's going on????

Hi Lougle so sorry to hear about your DD. As the parent of a very sickly DS I really sympathise as my DS has also had 'normal' blood test results recently.

Just wanted to say good luck and hope that she starts to improve soon....

xx
