Tonsillectomy Post Op Advice

My DD13 had her tonsils out last Saturday everything went well and whilst she hasn't been eating as normal she has been managing a good amount of food and lots of water. Until yesterday where in the evening the pain became awful before her four hours of pain meds were up. This has continued today. I have read that it gets worse as it heals but today the pain is increasing well before shes due to have her pain meds. She has eaten a spoonful of yoghurt and that is it. We live abroad and have no NHS 24 to call and ask for advice so can I ask if anyone has any experience of the post op pain and what's 'normal'. If it get really bad I can take her to A&E. The other thing is I 'know' she's in pain but as she's not rolling around am not sure they would take her seriously. She usually has a high threshold for pain so I know it's bad as she's 'wimpering' when it's at it's worst. WWYD

Bumping and watching as dd8 had her Tonsills and adenoids out two days ago and is in loads of pain.

Buddhastic · 04/05/2012 15:57

Poor her Rosie, has the earache started? My other dd had her tonsils and adenoids out when she was 4ish and I honestly can't remember her complaining once. So this is a bit of a shock for me and my DD. She has been given panadol then tylenol to take an hour after. She also has voltaren that she can take anytime but only to be given twice a day. It just seems to take the edge off and no more and she's due back at school after the weekend.

I had similar when i had my tonsils out. They hurt after the operation but a few days later became agony. It turned out the wound had become infected so i needed further treatment at hospital. I would advise taking her to the hospital so this can be ruled out or treated.

Hope she feels better soon x

Thanks Dawn, that has been at the back of my mind. Her older sister has been put on aniti-biotics this week as she has a throat infection and I was wondering if it could be that. Healthy household!

Dawn, what was the further treatment?

Buddha the earache has started, she only came out of hospital 24hrs ago so still early days yet, we have paracetamol, ibuprofen and codeine but not really doing much for the pain, she has hardly eaten anything and has drunk very little today.
I know it's for the best but feel so guilty for putting her through so much pain.

They needed to cauterise the wound. It didn't hurt at all...they put local anaesthetic on it then used chemicals to 'seal' the wound. Was all fine after that.

Buddhastic · 04/05/2012 18:57

Thanks for the info Dawn, have dosed her up for the night and am keeping fingers crossed she can sleep, then will see how she is in the morning.

Rosie, i feel guilty too. I persuaded my DD that it would be fine afterwards and it's not. Although, when this is all over I'm sure she will be delighted that the constant sore throats and anti-biotics are done with. Well here's hoping. I hope your DD has a pain free night. Keep her drinking if you can and a warm(not hot) drink sometimes helped my DD when the cold hurt too much.

Well it all went pear shaped as she started bleeding. Not profusely, but Doctor has admitted her as it had been going on for a good few hours. She is on iv anti biotic as it looks like one side is infected but how they can tell that I don't know as Doc said it was covered with a blood clot. Ent surgeon will see her in the morning. She's asleep and weirdly the worst of the pain seems to have gone. Hopefully, she continues to be okay during the night as the doc on duty reminds me of a sleepy Borat. I might have to slap him.

The fact that it is bleeding is a sign of infection or so I was told after I had mine out. I'm glad they've admitted her and put her on Iv anti biotics. It's a horrible op but it will be worth it I promise!
