Losing battle against nappy rash

My 16 months old DS has been suffering with nappy rash for 4 weeks now. I tried so many different things and I am running out of ideas. I tried: Timodine (prescribed by GP), Sudocrem, Bepanthen, Metanium ointment, Metanium daily ointment, Kamillosan, Camomile tea for bath, Camomile tea with cottonwool instead of wipes, nappy off times, but nothing works long enough. I even started to cut out different types of fruits from his diet, but don't seem make any difference.

I am racing against time to get his bum better every weekend, but it gets worst first day back in the nursery. Last weekend we used Timodine. On Monday his bum looked fine, a day later, when I brought him home from the nursery I was mortified that his nappy rash returned.

Could anybody give me any advice on what else I should try, that works fast enough, so he could heal withing 4 days? He does anything between 4 to 8 poos a day so some creams just don't have enough time to act.

I've been thinking of using Aloevera plant instead of cream, has anybody tried it yet?

WizzyBizzy have you tried potty training? I know you say he isn't ready, but sometimes they can surprise you and it would cure his sore bottom!

Hi, my Dd used to get terrible nappy rash when she was teething and going to nursery. I really found that egg white was like a miracle cream! (only as long as your dc can have eggs that isSmile)

My dd was on special prescription milk too due to reflux and colic and the milk made her poo 6-8 times a day- but that was just normal for her. Thankfully she is a healthy 4 yr old now with no probs with poos!

With the egg white- use one egg white a day and keep it in the fridge in seperate container to reduce risk of infections. When bum is cleaned with normal water/wipes take clean cotton pad a dip in egg white and smear it on the bum. As it is kept in fridge it will be cold and soothing for a sore bum. Allow it to air dry a few seconds and then put on nappy with no other creams. If u need to apply more ago white never re-dip cotton pad- use a new one each time. After a few hrs you will really notice a change. The redness will have settled and it acts as a great barrier to new poos.

I only needed it for a few days each time and then went back to using metanium cream- which needs to be put on sparingly so you can see the skin beneath it. (I had been smearing it on for months with no good results till I properly read the instructions and realised I had been putting it on all wrongBlush).

Hope this helps Grin

Glad you've got the time off work.

I found sprilon spray which is designed for bed sores an absolute miracle when all else had failed- it's breathable, you spray it on so don't have to touch them again and it's a really thin layer.

all the points about excessive bowel movements and nursery not changing quickly enough - could they make a point of checking every half an hour for a few days to see if it makes a difference?

Hello, I agree with almondfinger, the Weleda nappy cream you get from Waitrose/Ocado is fab, if a bit pricey. Also agree with trying to cut out fruit and other acidic foods, and just give water instead of juice (if he has juice normally). My DD1 (2.5yo) can't handle some fruits due to nappy rash, although she is getting better with them. We have to be really careful with juice too as some just burn her bottom Sad.

I hope your DS gets better soon

Mind you if canestan is working it does sound like thrush.

If it stops working then ask for a swab - dc4 ongoing 18 month nappy rash saga turned out to be strep A...

You are right RandomMess, my DS' bum is almost fully healed. But I'm just not sure if its stays the same when he goes back to the nursery next week. I will suggest the half an hourly nappy checks, and will ask them to continue using cottonwool and water.

Baby wipes are evil things, fortunately mine only went to the CM 2 days per week so for that their bums could cope with them, rest of the time it was cotton wool and water. For yucky nappies I would use wipes and then rinse them off with water.

What on earth do they put in them Confused

Hello
Just wanted to add, my dd1 sufferered terribly and no creams helped. We realised she was actually allergic to the nappy we were using! We switched to a brand called naturecare baby, which has no chemicals, made of wood pulp or something and it cleared up within a few days. Look online or i think larger boots sell them.
