We're covered in sick and poo!

DD (19 months) and I have picked up a D&V bug. Only lasted 24hrs for me but has really knocked DD of her feet. She's lying on my bed looking all sad and helpless and I'm not sure what's best to do for her.

She managed some dry shreddies and water yesterday but everything else came back up. She must be starving now but a little beaker of milk came straight back up so I'm reluctant to offer food if it's going to make her sick again.

Her nappies are awful and poos are just liquid. Obviously I'll keep offering water but if there anything else that I could/should do? At what point should I take her to docs/hosp?

I'm also worried about passing the bug on so everything that's puked on is going in on hot wash (my quilt got it this morn so hubby will have to take that to the laundrette), surfaces bleached etc. What else should I do?

Thanks

It's sound similar to what we've just had.

Ds (age 4yo) ended up lying on my bed so exhausted he was signalling "yes" by sticking his tongue out and "no" by wriggling his thumb for nearly 48 hours with brief awake periods when he wasn't so bad.

Have you got any rehydration fluids? If you have (think you can get them off prescription) then make them up, get a medicine syringe and get her to drink 5ml about every 5-10 minutes. That's what you'd end up doing in A&E anyway, and it's much nicer doing it at home.

If they take a little at a time they are less likely to bring it back.

Milk's not a good thing to offer generally after sickness. Mine usually like apple juice with a straw, although if I really want to get a bit of energy in then flat coke seems to stay down when nothing else is. (don't ask me why).
Dry toast is what you're meant to offer after sickness (can't stand it myself)

I would take to A&E if she's not rousable, if she's still bringing up water/rehydration fluid/apple juice when you're giving it her 5mm at a time. I wouldn't take to dr. If you're worried and want to speak to a dr. then ask him to phone.

be really careful re dehydration. My dd ended up on a drip after a few days of 'liquid' poos but no vomiting. we were in a hot country at the time (on holiday - oh joy!) but I was shocked by how quickly she detoriated. She was 4 at the time so older than you little one.

Thanks both.

We took a trip to A&E to be on the safe side as we've had no wet nappies at all today.

We've been sent home with rehydration sachets and instructions to try her with small amounts of dry food, no milk or anything that contains fat. Also to offer her cordial with sugar as opposed to the no added sugar stuff we usually opt for.

She seems to have a little more energy now so I'm hoping she's feeling a bit better.
