Knee pain in active 9 year old - advice please

My DS is 9 and pretty active. He plays football, swims and takes every opportunity to be outside climbing trees and running about. For the past couple of months he has occasionally complained of knee pain which can be in either knee. It comes and goes but seems to be getting more frequent.

It's starting to get in the way of activities now. Today he had to sit PE out.

We are waiting to see the dr.

Anyone experienced this?

Just googled and it sounds likely - but of course will go for medical opinion ASAP. Just feeling sad or DS who loves sport so much.

I have a very active DS who had knee pain on and off at a similar age. We discovered that he is a "supinator" after a visit to a podiatrist ie his foot rolls outwards as he walks/runs. This puts strain through the outside of the ankles, up the outer side of the legs and into the knees, often causing knee pain. It is common among footballers. My DS has now had custom orthotics for over a year and has not for a long time had any pain in his knees.
So I suggest you make him an appointment with a podiatrist for a full biomechanics and gait analysis.
This is a really common problem among growing active children. Good luck!

Thanks Kat - good idea. I will check his shoe soles for wear on the outside too. Will ask the doc for a referral when we see her on Monday.
