Very low temp but soaked in sweat

DD has been ill the last couple of weeks and has had very high temps of plus 40. After a couple of hospital admisssions and lots of tests dd has whooping cough and mild pneumonia. She is now nearly finished her second lot of antibiotics and is much better in herself.

However since Friday she has been having low temps especially at night but is soaked in sweat. Her temps have been between 34.8-35.4 but even at these low temps she is soaked in sweat. She also developed spots all over and purple mottling at the same time.

Any ideas?

Having the same symptoms here, pebs, with our 10mo DS. Intermittent rash and cold temps with night sweats. Colour was off a few nights ago, too, so called NHS24, who called paramedics. Looking better and warming up by the time they arrived, but was told to have him checked at hospital. All clear and doctor said likely a virus with sweating acting to cool the body, which then mucks with colour. He seems fine in himself, outside of a chesty cold.

Did you ever learn more? Hope your LO is feeling better by now.

Sorry, meant to say dorota, as you'd posted more recently.

Hi Dorota and HJBeans! Could you please share the follow up on your situation? How was everything resolved? did you find any reason for all the symptoms?
My baby is sick for more than 10 days. It all started with diarrhea, then temperature of 38.5 for 2-3 days and she started coughing and probably had a case of croup (she had difficulty breathing at night while coughing). In the next few days her temperature decreased to 37.1 - 37.4, but she continued coughing and was very fatigue and lethargic. Right after a nap she would lie on a floor with her head down and did not play. In a few days her temperature went up to 39,5 and she was diagnosed with pneumonia that only X-ray could indicate. We started antibiotics and in 4 days her temperature became normal but she had a rash on her face and body, behind the ears. The GP also suggested it is another virus. The next day after a rash she became cold and sweaty and her temperature is 36.1. I am seeing a GPs every other day since it all started and they say every time that it's just another virus.
It seems to me you have experienced the same situation, so I would really appreciate your feedback!

Sorry your LO has been so unwell, nadia - know what a worry this must be. Sorry to say I can't be much help - the medical consensus on our boy was that it was a virus and it passed within a day or two. Other kids at the nursery had the rash as well, which backs up the virus diagnosis. Was told that some kids will have low rather than high temps with some illnesses, and also that they're not good at regulating temp when young so can over-cool themselves by sweating a lot. Hope your LO feels much better soon.

Thank you for reply, HJBeans! It just seems strange to me that it is just a bad luck and another virus as doctors say...The symptoms are so alike with other stories above, so I tend to believe it's either one illness/virus that caused pneumonia with high fever, rash and coldness in this particular order. Or it is just an influence of antibiotics as all of us are using the same type I suppose. Anyway, she seems much better today after all what she experienced lately but I still keep a close eye on her trying to spot new symptoms...

I'd get medical advice tonight @Flc123

That is a very low temperature (assuming the thermometer is generally accurate) and in young children it is much much better to be seen by a doctor even if you'll be told he's fine than to see how things go.

I'd phone 111 for an out of hours appointment at the vet least.

ring 111.
dont leave it.

We are in exactly the same position with our daughter. Does anybody have a follow up post as to how it went for you?

Any advice you can give too awfully worried parents ?

our daughter had the 40 degree spike. The rash for x2 days and now finally the drop in temp at night. Please tell me there is light at the end of the tunnel!?

CeeJay1987 · 10/11/2023 16:18

@englishl1989 wnat was the outcome for your little one in the end? We have this right now! Thank you

englishl1989 · 10/11/2023 16:25

She had bronchiolitis and we ended up with a 3 night hospital visit. We rang 111 in as her temp dropped really low.

If it’s viral, ultimately you have to just ride it out. Horrible I know !

Hope your little one gets better!
