Help, my daughter ate superglue and it is all over her teeth!

This afternoon my DD3 aged 3 managed to climb up and get the superglue that my DH stupidly left on top of the microwave. I was unpacking my internet food shop that had just been delivered at the time so was a little distracted. Anyway my DD3 bit straight into the tube and about a half of it went inside her mouth. She started screaming, I didn't understand what had happened at first until I saw the glue. She was violently sick and very distressed, I totally panicked, but after a highly stressful trip by ambulance to A&E she was all fine.

Except her beautiful baby teeth. They have taken the brunt of the glue, especially the front lower teeth. All her teeth are covered in a layer of sharp gritty feeling glue. Her front bottom teeth are totally stuck together, there is glue all in between them. Initially it just looked like she had one long tooth at the bottom, you couldn't even make out the individual teeth. Some of the glue has flaked off following us brushing her teeth, but it is still terrible. I took her to the out of hours dentist but as she was not in pain and able to eat and drink they were totally disinterested. I was just advised to take her to our normal dentist on Monday and that it would eventually come off, although the dentist said he had never come across a case of superglue on teeth before.
My daughter's teeth were one of my favourite things about her, they were big and gappy and beautiful. I just want to cry when I think about them now all glued together. I feel so terrible and guilty, but is there something I can do to make them better? I will obviously take her to the dentist on Monday. But has anyone else been so unlucky or such a neglectful parent to have it happen to them?
Will the dentist be able to clean/scrape the glue off? Will my DD be able to sit through the dentist doing that or will she have to be sedated? Is it possible to sedate a 3 year old for dental work? Will my dentist just tell me to go away too? My DD is now fine in herself but her mouth is clearly very uncomfortable. All her teeth feel very gritty and there are very sharp bits of glue sticking out in places. Can anyone suggest a safe non toxic substance that I could rub over her teeth that might start to break the glue down? I was thinking of something oily like olive oil. Would that work? Or would I be better just brushing her teeth a lot, perhaps with a more abrasive toothpaste?
Please can you help me save my daughter's beautiful smile.

It will be fine. Denist will try and get as much off as possible but either way it will wear off in the end.

nickseasterchick · 27/04/2012 23:27

Ive had this myself Blush with false nail glue Smile as its not waterproof it just flakes off -the dentist will probably try and scratch it gently with the 'stabby thing' he uses to remove plaque.

BlueRinse · 27/04/2012 23:27

I don't believe anyone would sedate a 3y old for cosmetic surgery on her teeth.

You have been to A&E so they must believe verything will be ok, I'd probably be inclined to take her t my trusted GP on Monday for his/her view but in the end they are teeth that are designed to fall out.

I'm a bit Hmm that one of your fav things about DD is her teeth, along with the fact that you want to scrape the glue and/or have her sedated.

It could have been soo much worse DDD superglued her eyelid shut and needed surgery etc

BlueRinse, I am sorry to hear about your daughter's eye. That is the only place I could think of that would be worst than inside of your mouth to get superglue. Of course I am relieved that my DD is healthy and well and I know it could have been much worst. I didn't mean to be flippant at all. I love my DD for who she is. It is just her teeth are so cute and at the moment they are totally covered in superglue, not just a little bit, but a lot. I feel wracked with guilt and I am really worried about them getting back to normal. It is not just for cosmetic reasons either. Her teeth are now very sharp and gritty and my DD keeps pulling at them and is clearly uncomfortable with them rubbing on her tongue. I don't just care about her looks, and I know they will fall out.
Does anyone have any idea how long it might take for the glue to come off?

Don't worry about it! I had superglue all over my nails once and it wore off in about 2 weeks. I'm sure the same will happen with your daughters teeth. What ever you do, don't let your daughter know how distressed you are about it or she will get stressed too.

WorriedBetty · 27/04/2012 23:43

I Don't know with teeth but it certainly comes off skin after a while and in water comes off in bits.. The dentist will certainly be able to scrape it off.

There is a superglue dissolver and as superglue is used in A&E a lot, perhaps it would be worth a call in there as they MUST have some knowledge about when it can be used.

Superglue was used to 'stitch' me up after an operation doncha know!

thisisyesterday · 27/04/2012 23:47

silver lining: she won't go biting things she isn't supposed to any more Grin

i am certain that it will just come off of its own accord.
she may not be very keen on the dentist scraping it off, although they may be able to remove any sharp bits. but it really will come off eventually.

i am terrible with superglue. get it all over my hands every time i use it

nickseasterchick · 27/04/2012 23:48

I had some superglue remover you have to leave it on the glued area to soak in ...for 30 mins so thats no good in your dds mouth....i think the moisture of her mouth will just cause the glue to break away and peel off.

iloveyoursmile · 27/04/2012 23:57

Thank you everyone who had put my mind at ease that it will come off eventually. I don't normally post on here, just shamelessly lurk. But I feel like a terrible mother today, it is late and night and I start to worry. Now I am much less worried, so thank you.

My ds managed to put a tooth through just below the lip and left a hole there. A&e filled the hole with superglue. It lasted all of 15 minutes as it fell out on the way home. Went back where it was filled again, this time it lasted a few days, long enough for it to heal.

MissVforVendetta · 29/04/2012 23:17

I superglued a crack on my finger back together and got it all over my nails. It took about 24 hours for it to come off by itself, with hands in and out of water- bizarrely the glue on my skin stayed on for 5 days- so you might not have to wait that long for it to come off.

Just looked at the date of the OP, so I hope it's gone!

tintoytarantula · 30/04/2012 13:17

Hope it's all right now! But if not then I'm sure it will be soon. I make jewellery and am forever getting superglue on my fingers - between the shower, idle picking and just flaking off, it sorts itself out over a few days. I know superglue is scary-sounding stuff, but don't panic!

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 30/04/2012 13:23

Is there like denture adhesive removal products in chemist or something. That might be safe to use. ( if there is such a product bit of a long shot)

lovelyashley1991 · 06/08/2013 22:31

My daughter did the same thing this m

lovelyashley1991 · 06/08/2013 22:31

Morning. Sorry on phone keyboard is small. Grr lol

lovelyashley1991 · 06/08/2013 22:33

I feel like a bad mother too even though I stayed up past night and cleaned like crazy bc we are having company over for dinner here in a couple of hours. And I have no clue where she got it from !!!

BeQuicksieorBeDead · 06/08/2013 22:36

Hey remember superglue was invented for use on the battlefield for wounds...wasn't it?! Hope my nan was lying to me about that, she used to squirt it into every cut! She was a bit mad though.

I have done lots of silly things with superglue (without my nan's help) and it does wear off skin quite quickly. I can't use it without getting it on my fingers and usually some item of clothing that I like...now that isn't so easy to get off! It will come off her teeth, don't worry, I wouldn't even think about dental surgery as that could cause more distress and pain than the glue. Give it a few weeks and it will most probably be gone.

BeQuicksieorBeDead · 06/08/2013 22:37

ah just saw this is a dead thread! Hope that glue is off by now!

Willdoitinaminute · 12/08/2013 22:21

I frequently see patients who have tried to recement crowns or repair dentures with superglue. I gently tell them that it is a waste of time since superglue softens and dissolves in saliva. It will come off over the next few days while she is eating and, although I would check, pass through her with no ill effect. Since it is widely used medically it is likely to be non toxic.

Stickysituati0n · 24/09/2014 23:36
