Can I ask you some questions first?
Have you or anyone else noticed any particular problems with her hearing? If so how recently? Does she have any problems with her speech?

(I have some knowledge of this as I am a teacher of the deaf.)

trace2 · 25/04/2012 20:34

Depending on her hearing loss they will probably try her with some hearing aids. They will do more tests, things like speech tests.
You will be surprised how many children have hearing problems, the youngest child I have fitted with a hearing aid was 4months.
Where hospital are u being seen at?

trace2 · 25/04/2012 20:45

brigg i asked two years ago for a test as she as other problems see loads of pead they never did it:(

Think of it positively, it has now been diagnosed and her hearing better could/will help a lot of other things such as speech, concentration etc.

1950sHousewife · 25/04/2012 20:49

I have high frequ hearing loss and wear 2 hearing aids (for past 10 years). I dont' know if that helps you, but the hearing aids have been wonderful and means that life is so much less blurry.
I just wished I'd been diagnosed as a child because I think I missed so much. The problem was, I 'coped' and so it was missed.

Best wished with your DD. It must be a nervewracking time for you, it would be better just to know the 'worst', wouldn't it?

trace2 · 25/04/2012 20:49

i will try to thank you i do think now lots of things makes sense !

It's hard to have questions that are perfect at the time!
I remember sobbing when I was told and feeling so gutted that this was something that had been undiagnosed and also that I'd have the rest of my life.

Then I was horrified of having those beige hearing aids... Shock

High freq loss means that I hadn't really ever heard things like birds chirping in the sky. Fair enough if one was right next to me, but otherwise? My DCs voices are very hard to hear as well without hearing aids. It's bliss when they're in because I can actually hear them properly.

Do you know if she is going to be fitted with some?

trace2 · 25/04/2012 21:03

its funny i didint understand what it meant and it was only last week when i said oh i love being woken by the birds she had no idea what i was saying, and my hubby just says she screams loads wonder if thats any thing to do with it?

it always surprises me that hearing tests don't seem to be done as standard for children with speech problems

ds2 had little/unclear speech at 2.5 and I requested a hearing test and referral to salt. they were really quite reluctant to do the hearing test as I had no concerns over his hearing aside from the poor speech. But I insisted as I wanted to rule it out.
turns out he has glue ear causing moderate hearing loss and will need grommets

OP, I wish you and your daughter all the best! Like 1950s says, now it's diagnosed at least you can move forward and work on what she needs and hopefully her speech will improve too.
Good luck with it all :)

DS was diagnosed with high frequency loss at age 3 he is now 11 so feel free to ask questions. He has 2 aids and a radio aid that he uses at school. He has lost more hearing and we are now considering cochlear implants BUT if you met him you would struggle to know he is deaf. Hearing aids now are so much better than in the past. He does miss letters off the ends of words especially plurals but to be honest not many people notice. He is in mainstream, year 6 predicted level 5's and so far has managed without a statement. This makes it sound easy and it is not but I want you to know the positivies! DS is about to go to secondary, he will have a statement there and this has taken alot of work. The number of appointments can also be draining, especially for DS as he has to work so hard to hear he finds it exhausting. Check out 'parent place' on the NDCS website there are loads of people there able to offer advice and think about joining your local deaf children's society if there is one as other parents are a good source of information.

My dd has hearing loss in the high frequencies, fortunately it turned out to be an auditory processing issue rather that a physical hearing problem. It was diagnosed and treated almost by accident, we gave Johansen therapy a try and 6 weeks in there was massive improvement in her worst ear, after 6 months she has pretty much "perfect" hearing.

She was also over sensitive in the low frequencies and her speech at 4 was so bad the pre-school was relying on the other children to translate, we struggled to communicate with her and her reception teacher (very experienced and excellent) was very concerned about coping with the communication aspect.

If they have not definately said it is a physical issue then I would wholeheartedly suggest paying to try Johansen as if it is going to help then you will see some improvement in 6 weeks and can decide whether to continue or not. The therapist I used only told me on the first reassessment that until that point he thought we could be looking at permanent physical hearing loss so we were both delighted that she could be cured.

randon will look it to this but they did say that the two at school and the 3 different tests today meant all the same , so the this other doctor we waiting for is how to treat her if that makes sense

Trace have they said its possibly glue ear? My DS failed his first hearing test he couldnt hear the really high pitched sounds, they said it was just mild and they retested him on monday, he failed with a much greater degree than last time and he now has a moderate hearing loss Sad we've been referred to ENT.

kissingfrogs · 25/04/2012 23:52

My dd2 was diagnosed as hearing impaired at age 3.6
All the red flags were there (with hindsight) beforehand but it's easy to miss the signs or dismiss them as behavioural when they are so young.
It's also easy to miss when they are particularly good at compensating.

Dd2 wears hearing aids. Digital technology means better aids. Children's aids come in all sorts of colours and patterns. Dds are zebra print. I'll never forget her face the first time she wore them. Absolute delight. She stomped down the hospital corridor, loving the sound of her feet on the floor. And the birds! She stood in the garden for ages listening to the birds.

People don't realise dd is hearing impaired as she can still hear without her aids. It's just that she hears better with them.

BrigitBigKnickers · 26/04/2012 09:01

Sorry Trace- have just come back to this thread after my initial question to find that lots of people have come on with great advice!

It does sound as though she has had the hearing loss from a much younger age and I am so cross for you that she wasn't tested earlier. The very very first thing that should be done with DCs who have speech problems is a hearing test. The fact you asked for more investigations quite a while back and told no is disgraceful.

From what you describe it does sound as though she may have been born with this hearing loss (might it be connected to the other health issues you mentioned?) and hopefully this means it's not something new that might suggest a deteriorating loss. It's great that it has been finally picked up. I take it they have ruled out glue ear? Glue ear tends to depress all the sounds at the same level rather than just one particular band of frequencies.

Many others have said it, but digital hearing aids are amazing these days- so much better than the old analogue ones-and they have the technology to bring the higher frequencies into sharp focus. This makes the higher sounds in speech (sss th ff shh t sounds) easier to hear and these then become clearer in speech.

Try not to worry too much hope you don't have to wait too long for your next appointment. Do have a look on the NDCS website- there is a wealth of information from both health professionals and parents of HI kids.

Let us know how she gets on.

3cutedarlings i asked if it was glue ear and told sorry:( sorry your son got worse:( and yes its ent we now waiting for!

kissingfrogs again you wonderful ladies have put a smile on my face , if she can have pink i think she be ok :)

BrigitBigKnickers dont worry yes have had lots of good advice from here: this morning ) i woke up feeling better dd as had soo many ill health issues and yes i think she always had it thinking about it, and as i said to 3 cutedarling not glue ear up to now she had two failed hearing tests at school and yesterday had 3 different tests one where she hammered on the table and the second was a glue ear one i think put probes in her ears and no idea what last one was:( but told the hearing at school was consistent with thier test! soo proud on dd sat waiting for it all to end but i will be telling our community pead how i feel its been missed:( i mean she sees so many doctors and had 3 speech therapy since she was a baby:(. again thank you so much all of you:) it is all going round in my head still but its not making ill.

Glad youre feeling better about things Trace, it hard to get your head around yet something else isnt it? i remember alot of your threads from when your DD was just a baby, cant believe shes at school already!!! (where's the time go!!)

I too am so pissed of this hasnt been pick up on sooner!! My DS's speech is awful Sad as is his behaviour! He is stringing words together, but the word (along with missing sounds) just blend in together making very little sense at all. he's currently under assessment for ASD!! (i have an older DD with ASD, so his development is supposedly closely monitored!) Having read up on the impact hearing loss has on young childrens behaviour it all just fits into place, i just hope that it is just glue ear and we can start to help him Sad.

Sorry i dont mean to hijack! Blush but if anyone has any advice id be very grateful.

wolvesarejustoldendaydogs · 26/04/2012 13:29

I have high-frequency hearing loss and have worn two hearing aids since early childhood. Hearing aids today are about a million times better than they were when I was your DD's age. Mine are like two miniature computers that fit into my ear and adjust sound automatically to compensate for the exact pattern of my hearing loss.

The hearing aids will be fantastic and will open up your DD's life enormously - it will take a while for her to get used to them and may be hard work for you (as a child I apparently used to rip mine out a lot) - but the benefit she will get from just being able to hear more will be incalculable. Great that you're getting this sorted.

Ridiculous that no-one has picked it up (her hearing must be a lot better than mine because she has managed to learn to talk).

I would join RNID (Royal National Institute for the Deaf). They have really good informative newsletters, and they also have a brilliant shop with all sorts of gadgetry that can be handy. They will have lots of helpful info relevant to children too.

Be prepared for some hard work while she gets used to hearing aids - the brain has a lot of adjustment to do to get used to the new amount of information coming in - it is tiring (she may get tired, grumpy, frustrated because of the extra work her brain is doing). I used to come home from school, take my hearing aids off for an hour and potter about in my room, just enjoying the rest from it all! It will be well worth it though.

trace2 · 26/04/2012 14:23

3cutedarling awww thank you remembering us :) and hijack away we all need help have you joined the ncdsi did last night was chatting to a lovely lady about dd sending me some info out too. and i must say our ds 9 years as asd too so they looking at dd too for it:(

wolvesarejustoldendaydogs thank you for replying dd as speech but not great we understand her but lots don't even my eldest dd if it helps her i will be so pleased:) do you speak now ok? we did learn makaton with dd as it as been a long battle understanding her but they was just putting all down to her health and being delayed:( her behaviour is not great at min and she is so frustrated and very tired all the time she had more tests since Christmas as she is so tired but nothing showed up they even mentioned leukaemia at one bit, i hope the hearing is causing most of these because now we might get some where as you all great ladys have said xx
