Well, here we are again. Dd1 threw up on Sunday night. Since then developed fever, headache, sore throat. She can't eat, if she tries she immediately coughs it up.
This time for the first time ever there is no cough.
She got croup when little, quite frequently.
Thought she'd grow out of it. Now she just gets this all the time . She had it at Christmas, then chest infection in Feb. Then nasty vomity cough about a month ago, cold two weeks ago, now this again.
She has just been sleeping on and off with fever going up and down.

In the meantime have energetic toddler going spare after 3 days in tiny flat !

I know everyone says it's normal to catch bugs at school, just wondering if this is common?

I can't help feeling that it's not ok for this to be normal.

I think it is quite common. I have 4 children - youngest in year 1. They have varied greatly. Dc1 ill a lot at preschool and then not much at school. Dc3 had never been to the gp until half way through year1 and then she caught everything and had 3 lots on antibs in a couple of months.

Hang on in there Smile

DD is in reception, she has had 1 day off so far but did get chicken pox in hols otherwise she would have had another week off, last year in nursery she had 4 days off sick.
it does seem like your dc is ill very often.
if dd has a high temp or sickness i keep her home but if she has a cold/cough i send her.

curiousparent · 25/04/2012 10:17

My 4 yo DD starts reception in September and I am dreading it because he is ALWAYS ill. He has had croup, chest infections, sickness bugs, flu - absolutely everything he gets and doesn't recover very well from it either - it lingers and most virus's he gets end up requiring AB's for a secondary infection.

He is currently being treated for anaemia with iron as he is always so pale. If this does not help he is to go in for blood tests - I so hope it doesn't get to that :(

Is it possible that your DD could require some iron or vitamins?

BTW my DD (16mo) is hardly ever ill and if she is she recovers really quickly :)

Family lucky you! Most of my friends seem to have much sturdier children. It seems to me it maybe within normal range to be ill so often but to me she's Def at the far end of the scale.
Dd2 is much tougher, rarely ill.
Yes I don't keep her home with a low level cold.
Sometimes I do worry though, about why this happens so often.
I try to keep everything anally clean, always washing hands etc. I don't know.

Not sure, but my DD began Reception in September and hasn't had any time off yet. She has had one or two mild colds so far, but she wasn't ill enough to stay off school. However when she was in pre school she was ill a lot.

I hope your DD gets better soon, the poor thing.

My children are 17 months apart and I also live in a small flat, so I feel your pain. It's not much fun when one has cabin fever and you have to try and keep them busy indoors.

My reception dd is off sick again today. She catches every vomiting bug going it seems. It drives me crazy as I think parents aren't keeping their dc's off for 48 hrs post vomit so dd picks up lingering germs.

My dd was sick on Monday after school and as I follow the school guidelines she can't go back until tommorrow. She has been absolutely fine since Monday night so I do understand if parents do send them back to school early as they appear well, but my dd really suffers for it. I feel that her absence record is now really high due to the 48hr rule and am now expecting to receive a letter from LEA regarding attendance. Grrrr! Not sure what to do as she moves up the school.

It appears to be completely normal for reception children to catch everything going and their immune system will eventually improve.......so I keep telling myself! I also have a pre-schooler who is missing toddlers. But as it's appalling out there today so am rather glad to be stuck indoors!

Dd2 (year 1) has had a lot of time off, she has had lots of bad colds, flu, strep throat and water infections. Last week was the first whole week she had done for ages. I'm just waiting for a d&v bug as one of her class mates was sick on monday and is back in school today (so not kept home for 48 hours), was hoping we could do a term with no illness, dd1 was off yesterday as she felt sick (but wasn't sick), i always seem to have one of them home. I give them vitamins and have just started with probiotics.

justonemorethread · 25/04/2012 11:56

I did think she may be anaemic. She's often pale and had lots of ulcers in the winter.
I agree people not following the 24 rule grrr.
I just hate that she gets ill and is solidly ill for 3 or 4 days, with little improvement. I'd happily have just one day of vomiting + 48 hrs recovery.

She could be Sad, has she had antibiotics for anything? i find once my dc's have had antibiotics they seem to pick up everything thats going as it kills off all the good bacteria (the stuff that fights off bugs). Might be worth giving her 'minidex' (sp) its a muli vitiman syrup which contains Iron and Vit D, also a probiotic. Hopfullty once the summer finanly gets here these bugs will disapear. When dd2 picks up a cold/flu it seems to last a week + so she ends up having so much time off school Sad.

justonemorethread · 25/04/2012 14:02

Marne She had antibiotics for the chest infection, and once for tonsillitis about a year ago. She also had to take steroids for her croup.

She's very good about taking medicine but the vitamin syrup I bought is disgusting....

Anyone got good tips on decent tasting vitamin supplements?

OP posts:
Marne · 25/04/2012 14:23

My dd2 wont take any medicine but i can get the minidex syrup into her drink (its orange flavour so i put it in orange squash), both dd's will take Haliborange vitimans (eather the multi vitiman gummies which you can buy in big tesco stores, or the multi vit and probiotic).

here

Minadex ,my mum gave me this as a child, its great for kids recovering from illness.

justonemorethread · 25/04/2012 15:23

As I though marne - Orange flavour. She hates anything Orange flavoured! I'm sure there will be an alternative if I research it.
teacakes and family would you say the school facilities are average or better? Dd is in an inner London tiny classroom with 30 dcs. One week in the winter 12 were off ill in one fell swoop!

Actually I'd be less worried if she was catching a variety of things. This has the same pattern each time and it's almost Luke a grown up version of croup.

Anyway she's suddenly perked up this afternoon, so will stop fretting!
