ds is very sick

Hi
DS (2) was very very sick on Saturday night with extremely high fever. Put it down to bug or possible food poisoning from an ice cream.
He has hardly eaten for last two days but seemed ok in himself. However tonight he has started being sick again, 36 hours after he was last sick. His stomach is still upset. Is this all part of the same thing? I have never had a gap like that before, usually when you stop being sick thats it. Nhs direct say about 72 house tops and it has been that long since it started.

Dr tomorrow? Has anyone else's child had this?

Did you speak to someone at NHS Direct or just the website?

oohlordylordy · 24/04/2012 20:10

The gap sounds a bit strange and the fact he hasn't eaten much, but is still being ill is a bit worrying. Would be Dr.s first thing for me.

oohlordylordy · 24/04/2012 20:11

Is he drinking? Because otherwise I would worry about dehydrated.

I spoke to someone in the middle of the night on Saturday. They did advise a and e because his temp was so high but it had started to come down by the time we were ready to go so we didnt take him. We thought they'd probably just say it was a virus and give fluid and calpol which we were. He is managing fluid.

He has drunk reasonably well today and yesterday. He want milk but milk makes him sick. He is managing water and diluted juice.

Due to his age I would take him to the Doctor tomorrow just to put your mind at rest.

If he had a bug or food poisoning that can sometimes cause a temporarly intolerance to dairy etc which could account for the vommiting now without the temp.

fullofregrets · 24/04/2012 20:16

Yes, I think I will.
I suppose I'm worried if it is food poisoning from ice cream (think ice cream can be quite bad for stuff like salmonella and listeria) then it might be that which is making him so ill.

He has gone to sleep now so will see how he goes overnight. He's had sickness bugs before and often doesn't eat much for a few days and then eats like a horse to make up for it but he's never started being sick again before.

Can it coca? That's interesting. He wasn't sick tonight until he had milk but he had milk last night and was fine.

My DD (7) had something very similar over Easter. She was sick during Saturday night and had a temperature all Sunday. Seemed not too bad on the Monday, although her appetite was not back to normal. Then she was sick again about midnight on the Monday night. No other episodes, but it took a few more days before her appetite was back to normal and she stopped complaining intermittently of tummy aches. The "gap" was not as big as your DS, but it was very strange.

changednameagain · 24/04/2012 20:23

PS There are a few threads on here about children who have had a similar virus recently.

Coca · 24/04/2012 20:23

I'm sure I've read that and it would explain the gap. I would take him to get checked outon the morning just in case.

fullofregrets · 24/04/2012 20:38

It's just horrible when they are so little. Well, it is horrible anyway but I worry about him getting dehydrated being so young.
Hopefully his temp won't go up again and he won't be sick again tonight. Will keep a close eye on him. If no better in morning or sick again in night will take him to Dr ASAP. Might take him anyway just so I can stop worrying even though I know they will probably say it us viral and just give him calpol and fluid!

when my two have had norovirus in past we've been recommended giving them Yakult or similar to help their tummies 'regrow' the bacteria that can be stripped away with a lot of vomiting. It means they are more likely to keep milk and other food down which makes them feel better more quickly.
