Tongue tie snip for 24 week baby

My ds was diagnosed with a tongue tie by the midwife when he was first examined and we decided to wait and see if it would stretch out by itself or if it caused feeding probs. he seemed to latch on ok so we didn't go ahead with having it snipped.

As time went on he began to fuss more before latching on, kept coming off after just a few minutes and so I was continually trying him to see if he was hungry and trying to calm him down before a feed by using a dummy or going somewhere dark and quiet. I was always reassured by the hv that it was teething or a snacky feeder or he didn't feed well when distracted etc. I kept going this breast feeding until around 20 weeks when I began to express and feed from a bottle during the day to see if that helped - but he did the same with a bottle only taking a a couple of oz in one sitting. It occurred to me that it could be the tongue tie and when I mentioned it to the hv and she looked she said he was 90% tongue tied and was most probably affecting his feeding. So annoying that they didn't pick it up before as breast feeding him had been a nightmare. He had been gaining weight but only probably to my persistence in feeding him.

So .... Got referred after a bit of arm twisting and got him snipped today. They said they don't usually do older babies. He coped with the pain ok, it didn't bleed too much but must be sore as he went to sleep tonight without any milk at all. I've been a bit worried (and weepy!) as I'm so scared that I went ahead with it when it wasn't the problem after all ....

Anyone else had an older baby with tongue tie? ... Need some reassurance really....

Ds2 had his tongue tie sniped at 24 weeks as well last may! His wasn't picked up either until I started weaning and then it was obvious there was a problem...his tongue wouldn't drop in his mouth(if that makes sense?) so couldn't get food or spoon in.

Looking back at photo's from before he had it done you can see it protruded and Id mentioned it to HV's and GP's (and dr's as he was prem) but nobody took any notice until I really pushed for it.

Thanks for the reply - he seems fine this morning and fed during the night. Very interesting that it affected your son's weaning onto solids. My ds was completely unable to stick out his tongue ... They say it doesn't affect speech but I'm sure it would have an affect on pronouciation aswell. Feel like I did the right thing now! If I have any more I will get it done straight away and not leave it I think.

I'll see your 24 months and raise you 11 years!

I was diagnosed and snipped (under general anaesthetic) just before secondary school. It affected my speech all right, I had years of speech therapy before the snip and then years of elocution classes afterwards. You've definitely done the right thing, OP.

I think DS has tongue tie, he's 8 months.
All the stuff about very short bursts of breast feeding ring true and we are having problems weaning.
When he sticks his tongue out, it's like a heart shape, hard to explain!
Does your HV refer you or do you need to go to the GP?
Sorry for the hijack! Smile
