Vomiting bug - not keeping fluids down

Hello

My 2 year old has caught the vomiting bug that is doing the rounds and just has the usual symptoms. She has never been ill/sick before so I'm not 100% sure how to help her. I'm sure with a bug you stay clear of food until feeling better (I can remember when I was young my mum used to say 24hrs - is this correct?)

My worry is that she can't even keep the smallest amount of fluid down - 5 mins after having it she brings it up - I'm worried about her getting dehydrated:(

She has not had any fluid since 7pm last night.

Any advice??

Many thanks x

even if she vomits it back up, any liquid does have a hydrating effect, even if only a small amount.

is she weeing?

if you are worried, you should take her to the doctor as dehydration is a real danger in small children and can suddenly get much worse in a short space of time.

sorry, meant to add - do you have any ice lollies? they are really good for keeping fluids up and can be better than actual liquids

She had a small wee this morning. She is 'cool' (according to temp stick) and does not have a high temp. Even though she wants a good drink I'm not letting her and I'm letting her have large sips every few mins to try and give her system time to take it. Thank you for your reply

actually, small sips would be better - even spooning the drink into her mouth one spoonful at a time. If she gulps it down, she is more likely to bring it back up.

hope she feels better soon Smile

Hello,
Hope she's feeling better. NHS direct advised me that you should still offer food when they have vomiting bug, and although I was a bit [shocked], I did as told and was amazed that my (then) 2 year old did eat a few mouthfuls.

Also, if she's not doing well with drinking then you can buy Diarylte (sp?)- rehydration sachets from any chemist- children can have them from 12 months and they are best if there are starting signs of dehydration- also advised by NHS to do this, bought them but didn't need to use them in the end as DD managed to drink (and eat!- try toast), enough.
