Allergy to plasters

DD2 is allergic to all plasters I've tried. They leave an angry red mark when they are removed. Even sensitive plasters irritate her skin.
Is there anything else I can try?
She is a very clumsy two year old so suspect we'll need them often!

It's the glue. I think broadly speaking, there are 2 sorts of glue used on plasters and a fair few people are allergic to the strong stuff (used on fabric plasters ime) but some are allergic to the other sort as well.

Have you tried a dressing w micropore tape instead of a plaster? Micropore is very lightweight so may use a different glue. Or spray-on plasters?

Tbh, we're a non-plaster household 99% of the time, I tend to believe it heals faster if you get it clean and then let the air get to it.

No, I haven't tried micropore. I'll give it a go.
DD2 picks at things. She's got a wee spot on her face she's been picking at for a week. I'm worried she'll scar or I would just leave it to the air.

I have been allergic to plasters for most of my life. The allergy started when I was about 5, just to the fabric type ones, then I became allergic to the other type a few years after that.
I use small wound dressings with micropore, cut to the right size.

When I was at school and used to fall over most weeks my mum used bandages. I was never able to cross my legs in assembly Grin

It may not just be the glue. I am allergic to latex & recently started to react to plasters.

Be careful with her around latex products, do a google search to find out what can also be connected to latex wrt allergies. I have to avoid Kiwi fruits (didn't even know there was a connection there, but kiwi is a common link, apparently) and tomatoes can be linked, but I don't appear to have an allergy to them.

The sticky gum on most plasters is called zinc oxide and it's very common to have an allergy to it. I've got the allergy and so does my son. Previous poster was right, most people are OK with micropore. If you buy some non adherent dressings and cut them into squares and stick them over a wound with the micropore they will work just as well as plasters.
Research has shown dressings help wounds to heal in a moist environment which encourages quicker healing times, as well as protecting against infection.

There are special dressings for people with plaster allergy, you may want to ask your pharmacist. Also, depending on how severe the allergy is, she may be okay with 'Mepore' sold in pharmacies.

Thanks everyone! I'll go to a pharmacy tomorrow.

Have you tried germoleme new skin it's fan! Ds kept grazing his toes but wouldn't keep a plaster on so I put some of this on and it coated it and it healed in a couple if days, maybe worth a try? I had to order it at our (small) boots.

wishiwasonholiday · 22/04/2012 21:31

Germolene that should say!

I'm allergic to plasters too and i use hypoallergenic micropore & wound dressing if i need anything covering.

It's the zinc that i'm allergic to (many plasters contain zinc oxide) so if it looks like your DD is allergic to it too, be sure to check ingredients on anything you put on her skin as it's in some suncreams and Sudocrem too.

I generally leave my DC's grazes without plasters (unless there's lots of blood).
