If so, why? And how did it go?

My friend's DS had this done at 2.5 because the poor kid just bounced from one chest/ throat infection to another, and was really never well. He was lots better immediately afterwards.

DS1 had them and his adenoids out at 2.5 because he they were huge and were seriously affecting his speech and general development. He literally had no speech because of severe glue ear caused by his huge adenoids...they went in to just take out the adenoids but Id consented to both if need be and they found his tonsils huge as well so did both at the same time. The difference in him was amazing...he slept better and had so much energy and his speech came on massively in a very short space of time.

Recovery wise he was up and playing about 2 hours after the op whereas there was a 7 year old having it done at same time who was on a drip for pain relief and ended up staying in 3 days.

we agreed it needed doing at 2.5 but waited until the week after his 3rd birthday so that may not count.

However our decision was based on size of tonsils. He had real trouble sleeping and eating and was knackered all the time. His tonsils (without infection) touched his epiglotis (sp?) and almost blocked his throat. We were advised to do it. They were concerned for his health if they ever became infected and enlarged.

They did both tonsils and adenoids. and abit like IHTTC he was better almost immediately.
recovery wise like above he was up and about almost immediately, had a bowl of cornflakes 20 minutes after returning to his room and we were discharged 8 hours after surgery. (had expected to stay in with him but consultant said we may as well go home). We kept up with the pain med schedule we were given for 2 weeks and he had no signs of discomfort in that time.

dd2 had an adenotonsillectomy aged 25 months - and definitely needed it. She had moderate to severe sleep apnoea, and was starting to refuse food (other than liquids), and lose weight. She looked like a spider with black circles under her eyes, and when the ENT consultant heard her breathing asleep (we filmed it on dh's phone) he booked her in immediately.

She also had a floppy larynx, which added to the severity of it all, but the main culprit were the tonsils and adenoids.

She never, ever had tonsillitis (thank goodness).

It went fine, even though (due to the larynx issue) she had to spend a night in HDU as a precaution. She was in a fair amount of pain for a week afterwards, which we stayed on top of with 24 hour pain meds - and lost a bit more weight. But her breathing was better immediately, and once she recovered from the pain and GA, she caught up with weight and everything else and is now - aged 5.5 - absolutely thriving.

It changed her life, and ours, for the better Smile

Friend's DS had it out at just around 3yo, he was struggling with sleep apnea. Sleep improved a lot after that.

My 22 month old has had tonsilitis every month since last August. She's on antibiotics more often than not at this stage; she finished her last course on Saturday and we got the next prescription this morning because she's off again. She's constantly exhausted, cries when she wakes up in the morning, coughs all night, cries in her sleep 5 or 6 times a night, and is just miserable generally. I know it's risky but I'm sort of hoping they'll take them out before she turns 3, I can't watch her go through this for another 14 months!
