My son is 12 weeks old and after a couple of weeks 3 strawberry hemangioma s appeared, one big one ( size of a plum) on back of leg, a little one on his shoulder and one the size of a grape at the top of his forehead. The one on his forehead seems to have got lumpier but doesn't bother him. I've seen 2 docs and they both said its fine and perfectly normal and will go away on own by toddler age. However it seems many don't go away and docs don't seem to want to do anything. Anyone else had this? I don't want my son to be teased; people always if he's bumped his head, but I don't even notice it anymore.

What makes you think they won't go away?

Strawberry birthmarks are the ones that go away. They usually grow until the child is 3-6 months old, then start getting paler and smaller and are gone by the age of 4 or 5. It's port wine marks that don't go away without treatment. You can get more info from the Birthmark Support Group.

My dd is older now, but had a large strawberry mark on her face and a smaller one on her back. Both went away. She was never teased. Nursery-age kids don't notice that kind of thing and they were gone by the time she got to school age.

IMO the problem with treatments is that they all have potential side effects. If they have surgery, they might end up with scarring. If you do nothing, they are not left with any scars.

Dd1 had one that grew on her eyelid. She was a tiny little thing, only moved into 0-3 month clothes at 15 weeks, and it grew quicker than she did
IYSWIM. At about 15 weeks it was big and there was concern that it could affect her eyesight. However, it seemed to stop growing soon after this and she grew into it a bit more.

By the time she was 4 it had nearly gone and now, at 5, you can't see it. I kind of miss it!

My sons went away.

dd had one on her forhead, she's 7 and it hasn't completely gone away, the plastic surgeon we saw when she was a toddler told us they could laser it if it was still there at age 7, but dd doesn't want to, and it's hiden by her fringe. If anyone notices it it looks a bit like a graze these days, and flat against the skin.

Don't worry, people will ask but just tell them the truth, it's hard when it's your child but it gets easier. We called DDs her 'special spot'.

My niece had one on her forehead at birth and now at 3.5 it has totally disappeared.

My 8 month old DD has one in the middle of her forehead. it started approx 3 days after she was born and grew rapidly until she was about 10 weeks old then it stopped. It is quite raised and about the size of an adults thumbprint - very noticeable!

At first i was really concerned over how big it would get etc, but now, although i check it most days, i don't really see it iyswim.

People do comment on it when we're out, but only ever those who have had children with them - they all say that they will go away when they're toddlers.

most children who see it ask their parents "whats that baby got on her head?" and most parents tell them nicely what it is. If another child asks me i simply tell them she was born with it, it doesn't hurt her and it will go away. They all then move on to something else.

I do worry slightly about what other children will say if she still has it when she starts school, but hopefully it will either be gone/faded by then or she will deal with it as children do - answer their questions and then think nothing else of it.

i would only consider treatment if it was still as noticeable when she's 7 or 8 and only then if she wants treament.

My DD had three large strawberry birthmarks on her back, one of which was very lumpy and raised. I was so worried when I first found them getting bigger, especially about the raised one, and went to two doctors about it so I do understand your worries.
My DD's birthmarks started fading when she was about 3 and a half. Now she is 4 and a half, two of the birthmarks are completely gone and one is only slightly visible.

I'm guessing you've been googling if you think that "many don't go away"?

All except one I've known didn't go away on their own before they were 6yo. The one that didn't was huge and that was removed by surgery due to it causing other problems.

If you google you will generally find the worst case senarios. Let's face it a story needs to be interesting and not many people will bother posting "my child had this and it was no bother at all" Wink

My daughter's has gone away. She is 5, faded by last year. They do look a bit angry and scary at first I remember being freaked out at it's growth rate. But it was completely harmless and now like I say totally gone. Just another positive statistic for you Smile
