Anyone elses LO got Strawberry Hemangiomas?

My son is 12 weeks old and after a couple of weeks 3 strawberry hemangioma s appeared, one big one ( size of a plum) on back of leg, a little one on his shoulder and one the size of a grape at the top of his forehead. The one on his forehead seems to have got lumpier but doesn't bother him. I've seen 2 docs and they both said its fine and perfectly normal and will go away on own by toddler age. However it seems many don't go away and docs don't seem to want to do anything. Anyone else had this? I don't want my son to be teased; people always if he's bumped his head, but I don't even notice it anymore.

Two of my DCs had strawberry marks. They have all faded as they got older. Now I can't find the older one's. DS2 had one on his collar bone the size of a fingernail. Over time it broke in half as it disappeared and now that he is nearly 3 there are two small dots.

It was obvious when he wore a t-shirt and if anyone commented I just shrugged and said 'it's a strawberry mark - loads of babies have them'.

When they're babies, you (as in everyone) worry about what's going to happen in the future so much and invariably it's never as bad as you think it's going to be. If the strawberry marks don't fade maybe you can get another doctor's opinion in a few years.

Hi, both of my dc have strawberry marks. My 7 year old daughter had 2, one of her top lip and one on her wrist, they were both the size of a large grape when at their biggest. We had them surgically removed when she was 4 as the was no change in their appearance at all and they one on her lip was impeding speech. You can still see where they were and the one on her lip will probably need more surgery but she can decide when to have it done herself. Had it been anywhere apart from her lip we'd have left it well alone.

My 3 year old son had a large flatter one on his leg that looked like a bite mark. It's almost disappeared completely now, on it's own which is a shame I think as its quite cool Grin

I know it's worrying but the vast majority do disappear on their own and if they don't the surgery is very minor. You've got at least 8 years before you need to worry about teasing, kids are very accepting :)

I have a naevus (sp?) and not sure if the same thing as a strawberry hemangioma? I'm 38 and it still hasn't gone completely (on my face right next to my eye). My mum wanted it removed but the doc said it would fade completely - never has.

My DD has one on her top lip that appeared when she was a few weeks old. It grew in the first year and was quite red. It stopped growing when she was one, the colour changed to a white/pearly colour and it has gradually shrunk. She is five in a few days time, it is still noticable, we have seen a specialist at GOSH who was completely unconcerned and said that sometimes they take a while to go and he will see her again when she is seven.

She has never been teased, lots of children have asked her what it is and she is pretty matter of fact and explains its a birth mark. Adults are the ones that are the most insensitive, asking her if she's fallen over, or what's wrong with her lip, but, fortunately this happens rarely, and DD gives them the same answer. We've met lots of other kids with similar marks and I have been stopped by lots of mums at various different times, telling me how thier DC had a similar birth mark and it disappeared completely.

As you say, you don't notice it , my DD is beautiful birthmark or not Smile If it hasn't started to fade/shrink in a year or so I'd go back to the Doc just for reassurance.

My DD, who is nearly 2, has 2. She had a speckled one on her back, that didn't ever get very raised and another just below her one of her nipples. The biggest that one got was between a 2p and 5p piece I would guess. It did get quite raised and it felt quite squidgy. The one on her back has now almost totally disappeared. If I didn't know where to look for it I wouldn't know it was there, iyswim.

The one on her front is now almost a dappled reddy/greyish colour, not a bright red colour that it was at it's biggest, and it's really sunk. I reckon another year it'll have all but gone. I wasn't too worried about them as they were in places she could cover up, if they didn't disappear and if she was worried by them, when she was older.

Hi,my dd started to develope one when she was about a week old just under and to the side of her eye..it started off as a red scratch and grew quickly to about the size of a small grape..it was very purply red but now at 3 years of age has shrunk only a little and has faded to a pale pinky colour..as it is next to her eye she gets seen in paediatrics every 6 months and gets her eyes tested at hospital once a year..have been told different time lengths by several doctors from should be gone by 1 year(no) to 3 years(no) to by school age to even should be gone by 10 years of age..I dont notice it anymore but have found the worst by far are the adults who have stared and wouldnt even smile at dd,not the children.Doctors have said they wouldnt even think of removing it as it would be too risky...my older dd had a strawberry mark on her arm which wasnt as big and didnt need it checked as doctors said it wasnt in a risky place..so left it alone and it disappeared by the age of 4..all different it seems..

Hi Cassie. I am 41 this year and i was born with one in the middle of my forehead. At the time is was very purple and fleshy. As i got older it faded until it skin colour. The lump is still there though and still fleshy. My mum told me that the doctor told her that they disappear by 7. Mine didn't. Some do and some don't i think. I researched a little bit a few years ago and there is laser surgery available which i was thinking of having doing as mine hurts a little if i press it in the middle. It may be worth getting the marks looked at again as in my case i hated it as people always noticed it and couldn't have my hair any other way because i needed a fringe! Best wishes.

My DD has 2 on her shoulder. One about the size of a 5p the other about the size of a plum. The larger of the 2 is very raised & soft and isn't fading yet the smaller is maybe starting to go a little ( I say maybe as DH thinks it is but I don't). DD will be 3 in the summer.

The first time she became aware of them in the mirror, she was about 1, she burst into tears! Lots of cuddles & a chat that she has a strawberry & she's not bothered now. She occasionally talks about them positively in the bath or mentions them if she has a top on that's annoying them, she sometimes has a good look at them in the mirror before bath then runs off to do something more exciting. A couple of children in nursery have mentioned to me that "DD has a strawberry" but they're so small, they're just commenting on facts.

Our limitation is she doesn't wear strappy dresses in the summer as I worry about the sun on it (PFB). I don't know if they'll disappear I hope they do for DDs sake.
A friends DS has one on the end of his nose docs wouldn't remove it unless it affected his sight, it's almost gone, he's 4.
