DS1 (aged 5) has had a nosebleed two nights running: should I be worried?

DS is a drama queen but has woken up screaming two nights in a row with a nosebleed. Last nights seemed pretty severe, there was blood everywhere. The first night I thought it was maybe that he'd scratched it but I could tell last night that it wasn't and was a 'proper' nosebleed.

Should I be worrying about this? Why might it have happened?

DS had this, it's fairly common I think. Some children ae more prone to it than others. As long as it doesn't go on for longer than 10 minutes, nose bleeds are normally not anything to worry about, as long as they don't come after a blow to the head.
DS just stopped having them. DD had them too for a while.

Thanks, Insancerre. Do you think I should mention it to the doctor if it happens again?

It won't hurt to let the doc have a look and it will put your mind at rest Smile

Does he have a cold? That can make the lining of the nose more fragile, or check his fingernails for signs of picking, lots of nosebleeds are caused by fingers!
But if it keeps happening, yes to GP as it can rarely be caused by illnesses.

Nope, no cold. And fingernails were ok. I will ring the Dr this afternoon then because he has been complaining that his ear is hurting.

Both my DC suffer with them, more so when they have colds etc. Scarily, DD(4) had 10 in 3 days when she had the flu!! But as insancerre says, as long as they only last 10 mins or so and there is no major clots, its fine. Do mention it to the GP though, in case they get more severe as the dc grows

DS did have a camera up his nose last year as he kept having them in his sleep, but nothing untoward was found

My DD gets them when she has an overload of vit C; orange juice or loads of strawberries

It's fairly common apparently. I took dd2 when she started having regular "unprovoked" nosebleeds, and they weren't concerned at all, they said 'some children just do'. You just need to teach them how to deal with them themselves, as you still get adults trying to get them to put their heads back instead of leaning forwards.
