Underbite in 6 yr old

Hiya!
My 6yr old has been referred to a specialist orthodontist to treat his underbite. They are happy to refer him now that he has adult teeth and it is clear that it will not self correct. dentist said that the whole arch (jaw?) is forward.
Been told that the wait is 18 weeks at the most so I am pleased with that. Has anyone had their child treated for this, what should I expect? I am really nervous about dentists personally, but determined not to show this to my son, so I want to be prepared. Thank you if you can help. x

Sorry, no advice but saw you had an 18 week wait and was shocked!!

My dd, 12, has been referred to the orthodontist for a 5.5ml overbite with the teeth directly next to each front tooth slightly inturned and the wait is 10-11 MONTHS! Confused

How much of and under bite does your ds have?

Umm, not sure about the size, but the bottom teeth are definitely out in front. We are not able to use the standard orthodontist in our local town and need to go to a specialist orthodontist about 20 miles away. I hope you get your appointment through sooner than you expect.

Ds is now 7 and was refered due to crossbite we have been seen once and have a follow up in july. The orthodontist said ideally they like the top and bottom 4 teeth to be adult teeth before they consider treatment.
He was unsure whether they will be able to treat Ds or if he will be referred to the maxilliofacial doctors at the hospital x

Good luck with your ds x

Thank you alibobins, that was useful to read. I think I now just need to sit and wait for the appointment. x

I had the opposite problem when i was a child. Lower jaw was at the wrong angle and too far back.

I had a brace at 16 to get my teeth into the position they would need to be in. Then had all my wisdom teeth out - none had come through yet but if they did at some point in the future they would 'undo' all the corrective orthodontic treatment.
Then at 18 I had an operation to break my jaw and reset it (titanium screws in the jaw joint).
Less than a year after that I had genioplasty on my lower jaw (they put a metal plate in to give me a nice chin).

Yes it was hard times but 100% worth it. The other choices i was offered was to do nothing and live with it or to have braces to get my teeth into a better position but not have surgery.
