Yet another Chicken Pox thread - when to go back to school

ds1 (5) still covered in spots. This is day 7. They have crusted over, but he looks soooo spotty. He had terrible attendance last term (around 60%) so keen to send him back before I get a good telling off from HT, but he's still a bit itchy, and frankly if I was one of the other mothers I wouldn't want my child sat next to him. How do you know when it's time for them to go back?

my dd went back on monday day 7 but she didn't have many spots and they were all crusted over, ds had pox the week before easter holidays so he effectively had 3 weeks off (2 weeks holidays) he wouldn't have been ready to go back until day 9/10 as he had many many more spots and they weren't all scabbed over on day 7.

I'd say wait until he's more comfortable

Thanks - that's reassuring to here. My instinct is not to send him as he won't get much out of being at school and is likely to play up to the teacher eg 'I can't do that because I've got spots etc etc', and he is tired because it is making his asthma flare up and he is not getting a good night's rest. Its always the % attendance thing that stresses me out.

reception year children usually have lower than normal attendance mainly due to them picking up every bug going around and they are still building up their immunity, its ok for them to go back to school once they are all scabbed over, but if he is still itching id keep him home till he feels more comfortable, dd had them over easter, lasted around 10 days her attendance for last term was 67% and we got a letter, but when i spoke to school about it they said not to worry its just a standard letter x
