Should the nurse have listened to DD's chest today?

Took my poorly DD (17MO) to the doctors today (saw the practice nurse). She has been under the weather with a temperature and cough all weekend, and as of this morning has a yellow discharge from both her eyes.

I have been ill too and am on antibiotics for a chest infection and a steroid course for poor breathing. I told the nurse this (prompted by my coughing, which is the same as DD's)

She gave DD antibiotic drops for her eyes and said we just need to give her a chance to get over the illness.

I've just noticed that DD's breathing seems very fast and I'm worried that her breathing might feel as awful for her as mine did a few days ago. I'd hate to think she is feeling as bad as I did and can't tell me where.

Should she have listened to her chest to check? Am I being PFB to think about taking her back, tomorrow if not wedensday if its not all better and asking them to listen in?

Hi she should have really listened to her chest yes particulary with your recent history. did she examine her at all? or just treat the eye infection? how fast is your DD's breathing? is her chest sucking in at all when she breathes in? does she have a temp right now? sometimes the breathing can speed up when the temp is up but i think if you are at all worried about her you should go to out of hrs GP or a&e. shes still quite young and can get poorly quickly

No she didn't examine her at all but could clearly see the discharge from her eyes.
I noticed her breathing seemed fast while she was watching tv (so sitting calmly) and she was breathing about twice the rate I was (and my breathing is ok now btw) but not sucking in at all. She is still climbing on the furniture etc to a certain extent, less than normal as you'd expect when she is feeling under the weather, but she can't be feeling to bad.
I'll keep a close eye on her and take her back if I'm worried.
Thanks for your reply.

Yep I agree with the pp.

If you're worried then get her seen tonight.

Hi estya, whilst I think that your dd's chest should have been examined her breathing rate will normally be significantly higher than yours. A normal rate for a child of her age is 25-35 breaths/minute so this is likely to be double your rate. Obviously if you have other worries then she still needs further assesment but hope that reassures you about that aspect of things.

Some nurses aren't qualified to do things like that, but she does need her chest listening too.

Children that age breath around 25 breaths per min. If she's breathing much faster than that, or her ribs are sucking in when she breathes, take her to OOH GP.
