Chicken Pox: Calamine lotion on 8 mo

DS has got the pox and the itch is driving him nuts, preventing him from dropping off to sleep, and he's scratching at it while he tries.
So I stormed in there calamine lotion in hand but then didn't really know what to do with it. Mostly his skin is covered with his clothes. The only places he can scratch are on his head. But if I put the lotion there won't he just end up with it on his hands, and from there into his eyes and mouth?? It's pretty mucky stuff, isn't it?

So what do you actually do with it - on a baby?

i never used the lotion i used aqueous cream with calomine in it, you can get it from the chemist and i found it much easier to apply and it just helps sooth the itching.

Give him a bath with bicarb of soda in its the only thing which helped dd. Also poriddge oats in a sock under the tap whilst running a bath can help.

Yep done the oat bath and will try adding bicarb too. But really I want something to put on his skin between baths.
Is the calamine cream better than the lotion?
Whichever you use, do you put it all over or only on then non-clothed areas? And does it get into their eyes and mouth from their hands if they scratch?
Ideally I would ask pharmacist but me and DS at under house arrest and relying on whatever DH brings home for us to use!

We used Poxclin on a recommendation and it seemed to help. And the bicarb in the bath

I used calamine lotion on dd2 when she had the pox at 10mo. She was itchiest on her back so I used to strip her off to put it on then cover it all up with her clothes again, not sure how much it helped though.

Poxclin and virasoothe. Absolutely magic stuff. Dd didn't itch at all. She was older so I also gave her piriton first thing in morning and at night but don't think you can give it to an 8mo - worth checking though!
