DD managed to get a splinter in the base of her toe playing in some sand dunes last weekend. Its too deep even to see it and my prodding with a needle has not helped. Its starting to look v red and a bit pus-y and its really hurting her. Any ideas on how to draw it out? Have had a plasters on it to soften skin etc but hasn't made much difference.

Thanks

Have you got a minor injury unit near you?
Otherwise, you can get drawing ointment which you put on for a few days which can help bring the splinter up - but as from your description it sounds like it could be getting infected, I think I'd err on the side of caution and get it looked at.
My general philosophy would otherwise be to leave it for a few days as they usually work their own way back up to the surface.

Did you put Savlon cream on the plasters? I've found a good wodge of that with a big plaster over the top after a soak in the tube works.

Buy some magnesium sulphate paste, a melolin dressing and some micropore tape from a pharmacy. Apply a thin layer of the paste to the area where the splinter went in and tape dressing over. Give it a couple of days and it should come out-it will lift and stick to the dressing at which point remove it and put some antiseptic on. If it doesn't, leave it if it isn't painful or uncomfortable, or go to a doctor if it is.

I'd get it checked too as it sounds infected.

Ooh thanks quick replies. I've not heard of drawing ointment - have tried savlon etc but I think its too deep for that to work. Will have another try tonight and if no luck it'll be down to minor injuries in the morning.

Mag sulph paste is the proper name for drawing ointment, by the way.

How old is dd?
ds got a splinter in his foot when he was 16 months and learning to walk (hadn't quite got him shoes by then Blush) nurse gave us mag sulphate paste but after 2 days it was sore and puffy, ended up having to have it cut out at A&E as infected.
Worth getting it looked at if getting painful
