Baseline tests on small DS

Am hoping someone can reassure me a little or been through the same thing. My DS (4yo) has always been small for his age since being born 6 weeks prematurely with IUGR. He never caught up in growth as such, and is generally petite. He has a consultant who keeps an eye on his growth. The consultant has said he doesn't believe DS has any other health issues that make him small (apart from the IUGR obviously- but according to Consultant most IUGR babies make up some growth by age of two).
Just to completely rule out other issues, DS had a battery of tests about 11 weeks ago. These included blood tests (for chromosomal abnormalities and digestive disorders), x-rays,and a sweat test for Cystic Fibrosis. As I mentioned, DS doesn't exhibit any major symptoms in any of these things but Consultant wanted to be diligent.
So here we are 11 weeks later and have heard nothing. Have contacted hospital a few times. Initially they said not all the results were back. Now, weeks later, consultant is away so can't answer our questions yet.

Has anyone elses DC had these tests and know whether it is common for these type of results to take a long time? Or is there anyone out there who is knowledegable in this area of medicine and can reassure me that some tests take an age to come back? At the moment I can't help imagining the worst and that they've found something.

rare chromosome-oddity tests can take ages. I'm sure my friend waited like 5 months back in 2002 (her DD had a rare deletion). They will let you know when they know, ime, the pressure on them to get you off their books is far greater than any desire they might have to avoid breaking bad news (& they are professionals, they are very used to breaking bad news, anyway).

How small is he? We knew a 4yo boy smaller than my quite small almost 3yo DD. Just the way he was, no diagnosis as such.
