Hi just wondering if my daughter is slightly tongue tied as she says boo instead of blue - she doesn't seem to be able to lift her tongue very high but how do i tell what is normal? Can a GP check?

My nephew was tongue-tied - he kept saying 'buyoo' instead of blue and 'bayoon' instead of balloon. He also has trouble with his 'r's. It was pointed out by a nursery worker when he was about 3. It's hard to tell before then whether it's just the way they say things (and it's very cute!!). A GP should be able to tell, my sis was then referred to a specialist at the hospital and my nephew had an operation late last year to sort it (when he was 4.5yrs). He can now stick his tongue out further and lift it higher but so far it hasn't made much difference to his speech. Apparently it will eventually but he has to re-learn how to say these words.

Having said all that his seems a bit more extreme than your daughter's so it might just be the way she pronounces it. Let me know if you want any more info and I'll ask my sis.

Have a look at your tongue in the mirror: lift it up and look at the bit that attaches it to the bottom of your mouth. (or look at a willing third party's tongue!) Now look at your daughter's tongue. If the attaching bit is much bigger, and she can't stick out her tongue very far, she probably is partially tongue tied. A GP can confirm this, but whether you want her to have the operation is up to you. I've got a partial tongue tie, and apart from not being able to stick my tongue out at nasty people or say a few Spanish words properly, it's not an issue at all though I would make a rubbish lesbian

Oh yes, I forgot to say that my sister was told that it was her decision whether they did anything about it or not AND even if you have the op it doesn't guarantee that it will change anything regarding speech.

FSG - you might just have to be creative!!:o

Thanks all I will take a closer look tomorrow.
FSG - I didn't realise grammar and pronunciation was so important to lesbians Grin
