She has been up all night screaming and now has thick green pus oozing from her ear. This is the 4th time. She's had 3 lots of anti biotics and I guess the gp will be giving me more in a minute.

Is there anything else I should be asking him to do/prescribe?

We're also supposed to be flying on holiday in about 8 weeks, I'm scared it may do some damage to her ears. Any one have experience of this.

tia.

I'd ask about antibiotic drops rather than oral antibiotics - I've heard they can be more effective.

Poor wee soul.

Didn't even know you could get drops. Will definitely ask for those.

How did you get on?

mumatron · 11/04/2012 12:52

different GP to usual. he didn't think drops would work as not strong enough? she has a weeks worth of co-amoxiclav and I need to take her back to be checked when she's finished the course.

he wasn't too concerned about the flying thing.

Does the Dr ever take a swab to get matched antibiotics rather than just a broad spectrum?

Have you had an ENT referal - either these are 4 separate infections which in a baby that young would warrant further investigation from ENT and monitoring for hearing issues, glue ear etc, OR it could be one infection that has not yet been successfully treated because you haven't had the right antibiotics for them. Ds 1(6y) went through this for 3 months and was eventually treated with strong oral antibiotics and ear drops with antibiotics and a steroid in. You need to get this shifted before you fly because otherwise your baby will scream the plane to pieces because of the fluid pressure in her ear. Sorry to sound so negative, but IME GPs are pretty clueless with ear infections if the usual quick look round the ear and a regular course of amoxcil doesn't work.

Yes she had swabs done when it was last infected. Nothing that amoxicilin (sp?) Should have cleared up.

Personally I think it is one infection that isn't clearing it up. She seems to have been permanently ill since just before xmas.

I'm tempted to go and see the usual GP and push for a referral asap. I'm really worried about taking her on the plane now.
