yesterday's post just changed the 8th green mucassy diarrhoea nappy and there is a small area 10p size of streaky blood? Is this a red flag to head to A and E? Or ok...well ok in the circumstance aghhhhhhhh

Any help/advice would be great?

Doesn't sound good. Can you ring your GP? If you can't get through to them, I would go to A&E. Take the nappy if you can.

bloggingmamatotwo · 10/04/2012 18:37

Missed the GP....not sure what to do...we are 30 mins from a town good old country living with dS1 heading for bed....the next nappy (just changed) has a tiny trace of blood too...

NHS direct maybe the way to go?

Have you an Urgent care centre you can head to?

It's almost certainly just the diahorrea, but I think I wouldn't take the chance in a child so young.

EmilyPollifaxInnocentTourist · 10/04/2012 18:43

It can be something really simple but, in young babies, I'd get them seen by a doctor. Even if it turns out to be nothing, you aren't wasting anyone's time. Just go and get it looked at. :)

leftmysociallifeatthedoor · 10/04/2012 19:10

You need to get him seen I think, sorry.

leftmysociallifeatthedoor · 10/04/2012 19:10

Ps is there any blood when you wipe? Can you see any little fissures?

winnybella · 10/04/2012 19:16

Tbh if he was relatively ok in himself, I would be tempted to wait til morning. DS had a potty full of blood when he had a tummy bug, OOH doctor took a sample, said, yes, it's blood, oh well Hmm

Afaik it's not uncommon with nasty gastro bugs to have some blood in stools.

bloggingmamatotwo · 10/04/2012 19:54

Nothing when I wiped, he is ok in himself gone to sleep as normal...going to ring out of hours and see what they say...I know it's sounds a bit selfish to not take him, but the distance to the A and E and out of hours is 30 mins, toddler is asleep - and I think it is the result of the reaction to the cows milk....

But NHS direct can hopefully offer some wisdom....

Thanks for replies :)

Cow's milk can definitely cause internal bleeding and it can also cause diarrhea of the type you describe - my son has that reaction if we give him milk by accident. In his case the blood was hidden (occult) tho, not visible. Is he known to be allergic/ intolerant to it?

narmada · 10/04/2012 20:29

The mucus is also a classic sign of cow's milk protein allergy (CMPI) and again something that happens to my son if he's exposed to CMP.

Although I should also say that the symptoms you list can be caused by other things too - e.g., infections, and so it's worth getting checked out ASAP.

bloggingmamatotwo · 10/04/2012 20:32

Narmada -the link to my first post is on the OP, but yes he had cows milk for the first time Monday and it's been pretty obvious reaction since, saw GP and got nutramigen but the blood in nappy didn't start till early evening...-Narmada wwyd? Out of interest?

I would defiantly go to a and e. My dd had More severe stomach pains than you describe then blood in her nappy. Nhs direct told me to wait until nest morning when doctors open but some thing made me ignore them and take her to a and e. Turned out she had a bowel intercersection ( can't spell it). I am not suggesting that you lo has this as my Dds symptoms were more severe but I would defiantly get it checked out

narmada · 10/04/2012 20:37

I think I would ask to speak to a doctor on the phone - e.g., out of hours and see whether they would want to see him before surgery opens. It always pays to check with a young baby. Don't worry about being seen as a timewaster. I am sure cow's milk is the most likely cause tho.

bloggingmamatotwo · 10/04/2012 20:40

Ok thanks, battery going on the iPad, going to go and check the next nappy now and then ring - will update tomorrow now - thanks again everyone :)

hi blogging, how did you get on?? How's the wee lad?

bloggingmamatotwo · 11/04/2012 21:24

Hi we have just walked in from the hospital, after two GP visits in 24 hrs, sent to the hospital today where they have done blood, urine, stool tests (results tomorrow) but they do think it's CMPI and the cows milk has ripped the lining of the gut/bowel....but he does have a temp 38.4 at the hospital so could also be a bug or secondary infection from the cows milk reaction....he his still having horrendous green diarrhoea with streaks of blood but they saw it all at the hospital and were happy he was in his own bed tonight, we have got open access to the ward till Friday if anything changes....so very pleased he has been seen, very impressed by the care and really hope he starts to improve....
