Nappy Rash, again!

DS is 25 months, and still in nappies. He's always nappy rash on & off, but ive usually managed to sort it out.
This time though it's back with a vengeance. He might have his molars on the way, as he's been having quite a few dirty nappies a day, much more than usual!
I'm using bepanthen, and have used metanium, but neither have made a difference. I'm stopped using wet wipes for the time being, and am using cotton wool & water. He's also having his nappy off whenever we are at home.
Has anyone got any good solutions? We're supposed to be going away tomorrow and i don't want him suffering while we're away!

My ds is 22 months and has had awful nappy rash the last Week or so, I got some canesten cream OTC, as recommended in my local pharmacy and it certainly helped. Only used for a couple of days though. Other than that, change nappy frequently, wash in between changes instead of wiping, and have since used something like sudocrem at each change. metanium is also good.

DS got thrush on his bottom around that age (skin looked wet, shiny and red, and obviously very sore to touch) and OTC Canesten cream cleared it. Pharmacist's advice only, no GP involved.

OTC Canesten cream seems like the way to go then, I'll hunt down a pharmacy tomorrow. Thank you Smile

My DD suffers from horrendous nappy rash every time a tooth comes through. I use metanium with a layer of vaseline over the top as a barrier. Seems to work.

Have you tried changing the brand of nappies you use? All of mine seem to get nappy rash with pampers but don't with huggies.

Bicarbonate of soda in the water you use to clean his bum and also in the bath. It is magic. I used to make up a little spritzer travel bottle with bicarb and water when I was out and about for nappy changes.
Then use metanium. My SIL recentlysorted out her ds's terrible bum with this in 2 days.

SallyBear · 10/04/2012 19:31

I always used to use Metanium with Vaseline over the top, and then Vaseline once it was clearing up. Molars are horrid, as is too much juice.

Simple aqueous cream worked for us, and changing as quick as poss when there were "stinging poos".

WizzyBizzy · 10/04/2012 19:39

Daktacort (sp?) is good for clearing infection. Think you need a prescription tho.

Also a tip re Metanium that I was given by a dermatologist... You must clean it off, every time you nappy change, before you reapply it. Wipes/cotton wool and water does not do this sufficiently well, you need to use olive oil. So, cover cotton wool in olive oil for a second wipe of the bottom after you've cleaned wee/poo. Then reapply the metanium and then vaseline on top. Also don't cake Metanium on - you should still be able to see the skin through it.

you can use egg white until you get to a chemist

mumatron · 10/04/2012 19:41

My dd was getting really bad nappy rash until I started using a cream called Conatrane. I get it from the chemist.

When she gets it really bad I get fucidin from the gpp and it clears up really quickly

mamij · 10/04/2012 19:45

We use sudocream, which works well. Just make sure he's completely dry before putting the cream and nappy on. Hope he feels better soon.

Thank you for all your replies! It cleared up when i used Metanium at night and Bepanthen during the day :)
